Many Israeli Jews have long believed that the more secular Israel is, the more secure Israel would be.

That makes no sense, since their claim to the land is rooted in the Bible, and God's unmistakeable instructions to keep His commandments as the Israelites' role in His covenant with them.

Reminds me of that mess 20 years ago when Judge Moore erected a Ten Commandments statue at the Alabama courthouse while he was chief justice of the state, and the Anti-Defamation League was prominent in having it taken down.

The founders of the State of Israel never believed in that whole ‘keep His commandments’ thing. They just used the Bible as a historical link to the area.

Religious Jews believing in the Covenant were mostly unconvinced that a socialist state was a good idea. That’s why there is still a split between Dati Leumi (Religious Nationalists) and Hareidi groups, as well as between secularists, traditional, etc.
