(Part of News Briefs, October 13, 2003) Bob Herbert writes in todays New York Times about the NRAs efforts to highlight those businesses and organizations that are opposed to an individual rights interpretation of the Second Amendment. Strangely enough, a "journalist" such as Herbert would probably have no problem with unions maintaining a list of employers they considered "anti-worker". Nor would Herbert probably have a problem with the NAACP listing those businesses or politicians they consider "hostile" to the NAACPs agenda. Yet somehow, Herbert apparently considers it an unfriendly, almost "paranoid" act that law abiding gunowners would want to know that certain businesses have contributed to organizations that espouse severe restrictions on firearms ownership, or possibly even confiscation of every firearm from private hands. Now, Herbert is not above continuing the repetition of a variety of canards that the gun confiscation movement has found colorfully mendacious all these years. His statistic on firearms deaths since 1968 (Over a million) obviously has to include suicides and lawful interventions to be anywhere near correct. Moreover, Herbert is misrepresenting the scope of SB 659, which would only codify the recent flood of decisions recognizing that firearms manufacturers could not be held liable for the criminal misuse of their products by certain individuals. In essence, the immunity that Herbert decries already exists within the body of rulings from judges spread across the land. If anything, SB 659 would limit the ability of certain grandstanding politicians from wasting scarce public funds to file suits in otherwise futile cases. In fact, in a "buyer beware" atmosphere fueled by consumer organizations and investigative journalism, there should be a list available for gunowners to know that it is better to buy Budweiser (The King of Beers, no less) than to buy Ben & Jerrys or donate to the National Council of Churches. What is more, the principle of the boycott has provided other political groups with a means by which to make their opinions known (Surely public transportation companies are now fully aware that seating arrangements on public transportation cannot be regulated in regards to ethnicity). Given that hunting and firearms-related economic activity is a $ 1 billion industry in Michigan alone, and worth another $ 500 million in Wisconsin alone, the power of economic lobbying is not to be foresworn simply because some boob at the Grey Lady does not like it when the Opposition plays hardball just as effectively. Perhaps Mr. Herbert should stick to creating stories out of whole cloth, like some of his colleagues, about some other topic than the cornerstone of the Bill of Rights. At least he would not be stepping on some of the Lefts favorite schticks in meantime. Then Herbert doesn't mind that I have not purchased a Sara Lee product since learning of their anti-gun stance.
Sara Lee products include Jimmy Dean Sausage, Hilshire Farms, Hanes, and quite a few others that I can't remember probably because I already decided that there was no chance that I would be buying such products.
I am only one person, but if all four million NRA members participate, it will have an effect. The coming demise of the NY Times and the broadcast networks is another effort I support.
