Last Two 'Portland Seven' Defendants Plead Guilty

PORTLAND -- The final two defendants in the alleged terrorist cell known as the "Portland Seven" have pleaded guilty and agreed to serve 18 years in federal prison. Patrice Ford and Jeffrey Battle were among seven Portland area residents who had been charged with plotting to wage war against the United States.

The charge carried a maximum sentence of 20 years and a $250,000 fine. They had initially also been charged with money laundering, supporting terrorism and other offenses. Four others had earlier pleaded guilty.

The pleas came during a hearing when defense attorneys had intended to challenge evidence gathered under the U.S. Patriot Act. Because of the pleas, those challenges will not be heard during this case.

After their arrests last October, Attorney General John Ashcroft called it a "defining day" in the fight against terrorism.

I remember first reading about these guys here on FR. They were in the rock quarry firing automatic weapons and we joshed about them being Al Quaeda or Talibunnies.

The only thing Portland is doing about terrorism is giving them an open invitation to base their cells there.

One of the Portland Seven (Battle, I believe) actually worked for a time in Mayor Katz's office.

BTW, RBA, did you know that Moose's replacement, Chief Kroeker, was fired? We find out now that, when he was hired, they didn't know he was a Christian. The PTB were mortified when they found out about that. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did.

Affidavit claims mosque leader helped finance Portland Seven

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A man charged with trying to fight U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan was secretly recorded saying that the leader of Portland's largest mosque funded the overseas trip with money that came from mosque members, according to a newly released FBI affidavit.

Jeffrey Battle, a member of the so-called Portland Seven, also was secretly recorded telling how Mohamed Abdirahman Kariye, religious leader of the Islamic Center of Portland, participated in a prayer session at the mosque with the group just before the men left, the affidavit said.

al Fuqra was first exposed on a large scale on Free Republic about two years ago.

BTW, daughter graduated from PSU last year. She never feared a terrorist attack there. The possibility of taking out too many followers of Islam gave her great comfort.

She's in grad school at OSU, now. I haven't asked her how things are there.
