ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Albert Pujols, who led the major leagues in hitting and finished among the leaders in most offensive categories, was named baseball's player of the year Monday by The Sporting News.
The St. Louis-based magazine also named Atlanta's Bobby Cox manager of the year in the National League and Kansas's Tony Pena in the American League.

J.D.'s probably not worth much on the open market because he's so injury prone, but I love to watch him when he's healthy, and he can play right and center. The big problem for the Cardinals now is making room for Pujols' well deserved salary increase now that he's arbitration eligible.
People here in the Bay Area are saying that Bonds was the MVP this year, but only a fool would have taken Bonds and his stats this season over Pujols, his stats, and $14.1 million in cash (Bonds $15 million salary minus Pujols' $900,000 pay).
