Juan Rodriguez was at his girlfriend's apartment Sunday evening, waiting for her to get ready for a night out. He got a call on his cellphone, stepped outside - and became Hartford's 41st homicide victim this year.
"His cellphone rang, and he was like, `Be back in five. Make sure you are ready,' " his girlfriend, Brandy Evans, recalled. Shortly afterward, she heard several gunshots outside and feared the worst. "I just knew," she said.
