Fire at UTA cuts power to campus, area streets

11:27 PM CDT on Friday, October 24, 2003

By JAIME JORDAN / The Dallas Morning News

A three-alarm fire at a University of Texas at Arlington utilities building disrupted power to most of the campus Friday night.

Firefighters responded to a call about 5:20 p.m. at the utilities building at 606 S. West St.

The building was scheduled for demolition to make room for a new research building, UTA spokeswoman Donna Darovich said. Two workers were on the roof when a fire started there, she said.

Officials are still investigating the cause. One worker was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, but his injuries were not serious, officials said.

The outage also affected parts of nearby streets, Ms. Darovich said. Power was slowly being restored on campus Friday night, and generators would be brought in for residence halls without power, she said.

About 1,000 residents were evacuated, she said. The fire was under control before 7:30 p.m., but there were still spot fires, officials said.

Officials said demolition of the building could start Saturday.

Those would probably be Paschl Hall (used to be an athletic dorm) and Trinity House on West 1st Street.

UTA power still out after fire

Classes may be canceled if electricity not back by Monday

08:31 PM CDT on Saturday, October 25, 2003

By KATHRYN YEGGE / The Dallas Morning News

Power remained out at the University of Texas at Arlington on Saturday after fire destroyed a building that housed switches controlling electricity to the campus.

The three-alarm fire Friday shut down most of the university, and officials expected to know Sunday whether power would be restored in time for classes.

"Before 8 a.m. Monday morning, we hope to have all the power back on," said UTA public affairs director Donna Darovich. "If not, classes will be canceled and offices will be closed."

Students and employees should monitor television and media for updates on whether classes are canceled, officials said. The university's Web site is down as a result of the electrical troubles.

Portable generators provided basic electricity to dorms and the University Center, which provides student food services. About 935 dorm residents were affected, Ms. Darovich said.

To conserve energy, dorm residents were asked to unplug all portable electronic devices, and the university was able to offer only coffee and toast to students for breakfast.

"The kids have been out on the street trying to get something to eat," Ms. Darovich said. "If they don't have cars, they're walking."

The fire started Friday evening in the Central Utilities Building, which is more than 30 years old. It was scheduled for demolition within the next few weeks and was mostly empty, Ms. Darovich said. She said demolition contractors were in the building when the fire started.

Battalion Chief Deborah Bradberry said she wouldn't speculate on the cause of the fire. Two minor injuries were reported Friday night, neither to a firefighter, she said.

Smoke damage was reported in the University Center and College Hall. There might also be smoke damage to Brazos Hall, a nearby dorm, Ms. Darovich said.

Students who needed the university for library and computer services were out of luck Saturday.

"I drove all the way out here from Red Oak and the library is closed," said Najah Roush, 20, who needed to write a research paper. "I'll probably just call a friend and find other resources."

Sakkarra Winston said she comes to the library to get some quiet study time.

"I came to the library ... and saw the library was closed, the Liberal Arts Building is closed, so here I am on a table outside," she said.

The power outage also affected several blocks surrounding the campus Friday night. Power to those residents was rerouted and restored within one hour, TXU spokesman Ray Granado said.
