An Israeli couple were wounded, the husband seriously, when a terrorist opened fire at their vehicle as they drove on the road leading to Kadim near Jenin in the northern West Bank on Wednesday afternoon.

Location of Wednesday's shooting attack

Seven bullets hit the vehicle, wounding Valeri Weissbrott seriously in the jaw and his wife Nelly who was lightly wounded from shrapnel and suffered from shock.

It is the third time the couple have been shot at by terrorists in exactly the same location, but the first time they have been wounded in an attack.

IDF forces who reached the site alerted a military doctor and later a Magen David Adom crew arrived at the site and stabilized Weissbrott's. He was airlifted to Rambam Hospital in Haifa where he underwent surgery, his condition described as moderate to serious.

The Fatah Al Aksa Brigade later claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attacker apparently hid behind a mound of earth at the roadside waiting to shoot at the first Israeli vehicle that passed by and after perpetrating the attack fled to one of the nearby villages close to Jenin.

Troops who searched the area later entered the Sabah Al Nur village outside of Jenin in search of the fugitives involved in the shooting. Troops surrounded a house where they believed the fugitives were hiding and fired a tank shell at the building only to discover that none of the suspects were inside. Shortly after, the soldiers pulled out of the village.

Mazal Emek, spokeswoman of Kadim said the Wesibrott's, both doctors at the Haemek Hospital in Afula, lived in the community a number of years. "They have one married daughter and a grandson who also live in Kadim," she said.

"This is the third time they have been shot at but the first time they were wounded," said Emek. "Each one of us who didn't drive on the road at 2 was saved," she said adding, "It could happen to anyone."

On Wednesday night, a bomb was thrown at security forces in Nablus, and shots were fired at an IDF post in Kadim east of Jenin, no one was wounded in either attack.

In the Gaza Strip, security forces shot and killed a Palestinian and wounded a second after spotting them in a restricted area near the Gaza border fence with Nahal Oz on Wednesday morning. The Palestinians ignored the soldiers' warnings to stop IDF officials said.

The two had in their posession a cellular phone and a detailed map of the area. Officials said they appeared to have been sent to compile intelligence information in preparation for a planned attack. The wounded Palestinian was taken to hospital in Israel.

The dead Palestinian was identified as Mohammed Awad a member of the Islamic Jihad. Hours later while searching the area, troops found a 20 kilogram bomb in the exact location where the two had been spotted. Border Police sappers blew it up. Shots were also fired at an IDF post near Rafah , no one was wounded and no damage reported.

Wednesday's shooting attack occurred shortly after the IDF announced an easing up of restrictions allowing 3000 merchants from the West Bank and 1000 from the Gaza Strip to enter Israel for work.

In addition 1500 laborers from the West Bank over the age of 21 were also permitted to work at the Atarot industrial site north of Jerusalem. The Palestinian bus transport was also permitted to resume services between the major West Bank cities.

Civil Administration spokeswoman Talia Somech said that the service had been suspended following the suicide bomb attack on Egged Bus 2 in Jerusalem in August. In July alone over 180, 000 Palestinians used the buses she added.

Palestinian terrorists fired at an Israeli car shortly after 2 PM today, wounding two passengers - one of whom is in serious condition. Medical personnel treated a third passenger for shock.

The attack occurred on the road leading to the northern Shomron communities of Ganim and Kadim, just south of Jenin and approximately 15 kilometers from Afula. Large IDF forces are searching for the attackers, who apparently escaped into one of the nearby Arab villages. Fatah's Al-Aqsa Brigade, which has committed many terrorist shootings in the area, took responsibility for today's attack.

The Kadim residents wounded in this afternoon’s shooting attack in the northern Shomron have been identified as Kadim residents Valery and Nellie Weisenbrot. Dr. Nellie, a radiologist in Afula’s HaEmek Hospital, was transported to HaEmek in moderate-to-light condition. Valery, her husband, is a researcher in the nephrology lab in HaEmek. His condition is described as serious and complicated. He was hit in his face by gunfire. He was transported from the scene by an IDF helicopter, flown to the trauma unit of the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

How can this be?

After all,

According to the teachings of Islam, Ramadan commemorates the revelation of God's word in the Holy Koran to the prophet Mohammed. In this season, Muslims come together to remember their dependence on God, and to show charity to their neighbors.
