[PLO Terrorist] Ashrawi arrives for peace prize

CONTROVERSIAL Palestinian MP Hanan Ashrawi arrived in Sydney this morning ahead of a ceremony to award her a peace prize.

Dr Ashrawi was chosen by the Sydney Peace Foundation to receive the Sydney Peace Prize for her commitment to human rights, to the peace process in the Middle East and for her courage in speaking against oppression, against corruption and for justice.

Dr Ashrawi will deliver the 2003 Sydney Peace Prize lecture tonight at the Seymour Centre in Sydney, a Sydney Peace Foundation spokesman said.

NSW Premier Bob Carr will award the peace prize to Dr Ashrawi at a dinner at Parliament House tomorrow evening.

The choice has drawn heated opposition from sections of Sydney's Jewish community, and Sydney Lord Mayor Lucy Turnbull has said she will boycott the presentation ceremony.

Would Ashrawi be a voice of reason and moderation? Palestinian society had spawned Hamas and Islamic Jihad; two Islamist groups committed to Israel’s elimination and the use of indiscriminate terror. Yet, in response to a journalist’s question at an October 1997 press conference, Ashrawi said she believed that, "politically Hamas has the right to express its political opinion, and it has the right to be part of the fabric of society." That opinion consists of eliminating Israel by diverse forms of violence.

I'll never forget a debate the Ted Koppel set up between the Israeli leadership and the Palestinian leadership many, many years ago. Does anybody else remember this? It was a big media event. She was there. During the debate, the Palestinians NEVER, NOT ONCE looked at the Israelis and talked right into the cameras. They explained how they do not recognize Israel or Israelis. Even Ted Koppel was flummoxed as to what to do. It spoke volumes as to how futile these efforts are.

"Sisters and Brothers,

"From Jerusalem, from the heart of Palestine, a land besieged, and repeatedly violated by a most brutal Israeli military occupation, I have come to join you today. From the midst of the people of Palestine, a tortured nation, guilty only of an unwavering commitment to freedom, dignity, and independence, I have come to join you today. From the depths of unredeemed history, I have come to join you today. I represent a narrative of exclusion, denial, racism, and national victimization, but I also come with a message of hope, redemption, and historical vindication embodied in the spirit and the will of a people that has refused to succumb to all forces of oppression, violence, cruelty, and injustice."

Hanan Ashrawi
Excerpt from Address to The World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerances, Durban, South Africa August 28, 2001

Strange, I thought they spoke English in Australia. Maybe they use a different definition for the words "peace", and "human rights" than the rest of us.
