Democrats have waxed apoplectic -- or rather they have pretended to wax apoplectic -- over the allegation that someone in the Bush White House supposedly leaked the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame, in retaliation for her husband Joseph C. Wilson IV 's activities as a fiercely partisan anti-war propagandist.
Whoever leaked Madam Plame's identity should be jailed, say the spinmeisters.
"According to Section 421a of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, the unauthorized identification of a CIA operative is a criminal act punishable by up to ten years in federal prison," states an indignant press release from Democratic Senator Charles Schumer's Web site.
Ten years in Club Fed is no joke. It is therefore with no small degree of trepidation that I now place my own head on the chopping block by unveiling the name of yet another anti-Bush operative alleged to be a covert asset of the Central Intelligence Agency: former co-president of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton.
Okay, okay, so it's old news. Bill Clinton's CIA connection was first divulged in the 1996 book Partners in Power: The Clintons and Their America by Roger Morris, a leftwing dissident who resigned from Nixon's National Security Council in 1970, in protest over the U.S. invasion of Cambodia.
In a review of Partners in Power, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard writes:
According to the book, the bearded, dishevelled Rhodes scholar [Bill Clinton] was recruited by the CIA while at Oxford - along with several other young Americans with political aspirations - to keep tabs on fellow students involved in protest activities against the Vietnam War. Morris says that the young Clinton indulged in some low-level spying in Norway in 1969, visiting the Oslo Peace Institute and submitting a CIA informant's report on American peace activists who had taken refuge in Scandinavia to avoid the draft. "An officer in the CIA station in Stockholm confirmed that," said Morris. ...
The CIA started recruiting campus informants under President Lyndon Johnson when he demanded hard proof that there were, in his words, "commie money and organisers behind this student s***". The programme, known as Operation Chaos, would offer informants a wide range of inducements: a little cash on the side; taking care of their draft problems; and promises of future help. ...
Mr. Clinton's alleged ties to the CIA would explain some later episodes during his tenure as Governor of Arkansas, when his state became a staging-point for President Ronald Reagan's secret effort to supply the Nicaraguan Contra rebels. An Arkansas State Trooper, L. D. Brown, has testified in a deposition that he was inducted into the CIA on Mr. Clinton's suggestion, and then went on two clandestine flights to deliver weapons to Central America.
Mr. Clinton was even commended for his "patriotic" work by the Reagan White House after he had sent the Arkansas National Guard to Honduras for manoeuvres. The deployment was a ruse by the Pentagon, according to Morris. The Arkansas Guard left its "excess" inventory behind, providing a cache of weapons that were slipped to the Contras. ...
The point is not that Bill and Hillary Clinton are Right-wingers in disguise - although Morris demolishes the pretence that they were progressive reformers in Arkansas. It is that they have no conviction, no ideology, no guiding purpose. Driven by raw ambition, they will make any compromise necessary to advance their interests.
Given Bill Clinton's little-known ties to the intelligence underworld, I am tempted to wonder whether "Plame-gate" offers a larger question for Americans than the one Democrat spinmeisters would like us to ask. Rather than demanding, "Who outed Valerie Plame?", perhaps we ought to ask just how many people are left in the employ of our federal government who do not take marching orders, one way or the other, from Langley, Virginia.
And whose side are all these covert operators serving? Are they with us or against us?

L.D., as I hope you know, was recruited to go down to Mexico and take out a big American drug runner. It turns out that the person he was supposed to take out was Terry Reed, whom I have interviewed about the event. I wrote a piece about Clinton knowing that a CIA assest was sent to Mexico to kill an innocent American. Fortunately, L.D. realized that Reed was not the bad guy and did not carry out the assignment.
Just reread that book...along with Ambrose Evans-Pritchard's "The Secret Life of Bill Clinton", it is absolutely essential...he uncovers another rape victim.
And gives a feeling for what the Demicans and Republicrats were up to circa 1995...encouraging a Mortgage Refi boom to raise living standards all the while encouraging "Outsourcing" of products, if not yet the Middle Class.
I would love to serve my country, but having to spend that much time around SDS types et al might have been too much to ask!
