BAGHDAD, Iraq - Soldiers in Baghdad are able to get a taste of home, thanks to Walid Mahmoud. He owns a pizzeria in the Iraqi capital. Most Iraqis have no idea what pizza is, and certainly wouldn't know how to make one. But Mahmoud has worked in a family-owned pizza shop in Rome. When the Americans came to town, he scrapped together enough money to open his own pizzeria. The Wall Street Journal reports on a good day he sells nearly 200 pizzas.
But orders can drop to a handful depending on terrorist activity. He hopes after the American soldiers leave, there will be enough contractors left behind who'll want a pizza-to-go.

Hey, with a little marketing, some judiciously promoted freebies, Iraqis might like it too.
Ahh that entrepeneurial spirit. It always emerges if allowed.

After witnessing the way the Japanese and Californians have tortured pizza toppingswise, I'm morbidly curious to see what Persians will do to it.

Guys like Mr. Mahmoud are the future of Iraq. A few more like him and maybe these closed fascist Middle East societies will join the rest of us in the 21st century.

"...on a good day he sells nearly 200 pizzas."I can suggest a great slogan if he decides to do deliveries:
...shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
Sound familiar? It was originally Persian!

Good for him. I'd like to see many, many more people like this blossom in Iraq.

How nice to see people cracking snide little jokes about the very Iraqis for whom Americans died freeing from a brutal dictator.

After being "Americanized" he will be forced to pay a mimimum wage and pay numerous taxes and adhere to a zillion regulations and zoning laws.
He will then go out of business and the people will ask where the jobs have gone.

This is terrible. Iraqi culture is being corrupted by pizza-selling capitalists. How dare this man try to make a better life for himself without Howard Dean's help. </leftist ideology>

"I'd like a pizza with pork sausage and Canadian bacon topping, please." I used to order pizzas from Muslim-owned pizza places when I lived in Germany and they had no trouble with my topping requests. The worst pizza I got while living there was from an Indian-owned pizzeria. They doused the thing with curry powder.

They doused the thing with curry powder.Blecchhh! What a way to ruin a good thing! Middle Eastern food is quite good (Syrian & Lebanese) and would not differ much from Mediterranean food.
