German town too small for brothel

SPEYER, Germany, Nov 21 (AFP) - A German court Friday banned a prospective brothel owner from setting up in Speyer because the southwestern town does not have enough people living there.

Under German law towns with more than 50,000 people can have a brothel while those with fewer inhabitants cannot.

The businessman wanted to site the brothel near the world-famous cathedral that is Speyer's main tourist draw, but local authorities refused permission, arguing that the town had fewer than the requisite 50,000 people.

He appealed the decision, arguing that their figure did not take account of people who had second homes in the town.

However, the federal administrative court agreed with the town elders.

Prostitution was legalised in Germany in December 2001, under a law giving sex workers legal recognition and social and labour rights.

I think McDonald's uses a similar figure for deciding where to locate restaurants.

Coincidentally: German towns with populations under the magic 50,000 cut-off mark are have lots and LOTS of sheep herders in 'em... :)

A report from a "French" source regarding "German" brothels. I wonder if this is covered in the Michellen Guide?

When I lived there in the 80's it was legal.

There was "40 mark Strasse" outside of Frankfurt or Kaiser Slaurtern I think.

Also,I lived about a mile from a brothel. Went there once but they kicked me out because I would not buy drinks. (you had to drink to stay).

"Under German law towns with more than 50,000 people can have a brothel while those with fewer inhabitants cannot. "

Now, it's just these kinds of over regulation that is forcing industry to move to other countries.
