[history]
Back in 1955, then-rookie reporter David Halberstam was summarily fired by the editor of the West Point Daily Times-Leader in northeast Mississippi for being too journalistically independent.
Forty-eight years later Halberstam, with a Pulitzer Prize for reporting in Vietnam and 14 nationally acclaimed best-seller books in his resume, was summoned back to Mississippi.

Every Winter biography leaves out his massive defeat to Republican Senator Thad Cochran in 1984, when Winter could not break 40% of the vote. A lot of people sing his praises on education but fact be told he was most liberal governor Mississippi has had in the modern era of politics. Mississippi's Jimmy Carter.

You're right. William Winter is the most overrated political figure in recent MS history. That said, Halberstam's hyperbolic praise still astounds me.
(I wonder how much Halberstam got paid for his appearance?)

I thought Halberstam graduated from Harvard. I didn't know he's a graduate of the Lewinsky School of Journalism.
(Why do I say this? B/C Halberstam's speech was more of a BJ than a 'tribute!')

Those biograpies always seem to overlook the fact that Mr. Winter was the State Treasurer back in the mid 50's who helped enforce the new law when Mississippi instituted a tax on all whiskey brought illegally into the state. I've been told Mr. Winter was a regular sight walking through the lobby of the Heidelberg Hotel in Jackson with a large sack carrying the day's payments from the local bootleggers for later dispersal among the party loyal. I also didn't see Mr. Minor mention that during his gubernatorial race against Bill Waller Mr. Winter made a commercial reminding everyone his middle name was Forrest after Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, one of the founders of the KKK. But I'm sure these oversights will be corrected in the next bio. (yeh, right!)
