"from what i've read, the pandemic of 1918 was different from a typical flu outbreak in that it hit young, previously healthy, adults as well as the usual old and sick people."

It's my understanding that it began on an army base in Kansas (young troops) and was spread around the world when those troops shipped out. Something like 40-50 million died worldwide if IIRC.
