California Hispanics urged to stay home tomorrow

San Francisco-AP -- Hispanics in California are being urged to stay home from school, work and stores tomorrow to protest the repeal of a driver's license law.

The measure, which would have allowed undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses, was signed by former Governor Gray Davis. However, it has been repealed by Governor Schwarzenegger.

A spokesman for the Mexican American Political Association says the strike is a matter of "respect and dignity." Edward Headington says protesters hope to remind legislators that the driver's license issue has not been forgotten.

However, some people are expressing reservations about the protest. An official with an immigrant rights group says he supports the goal of the strike -- but is worried that people who walk off their jobs may not be allowed to return.

Don't count on it. That mentality didn't keep them in Mexico!

Does that mean they won't be going to other social services for any extra $$ as well? I mean the ones that aren't suppose to be in California? This MIGHT be good!

Go back where they came from, that would really show us. What a joke they will go about what they are already doing breaking the law being here.

Oh, no, no, no. That ain't part of the agenda. It's more like California Non-hispanics Urged To Leave State.

I suspect the vast majority of Hispanics will utterly ignore this. What conservatives have a history of doing is assuming that all groups fall into the neat little categories that the Left tries to paint them into. Polls of legal Hispanic residents in California consistently show that a majority of them also oppose licenses for illegals. Now, if the illegals favor it - well, duh. But they are obviously established as criminals first. To consider them representative of all Hispanics is just dumb.

There are people at my brother's work who are going to stay home in protest. I say, they're outing themselves. Send INS to their homes and deport them.

Back to Visalia or Tulare County??? Why would I want to go back to where myself and my brothers were born??? I don't understand how me going to the county where I was born would help my state California, where my 5 siblings and 14 nieces and nephews, have so many assets??? Could you explain how me or my brothers moving back to the county we were born will help this state??

The only ones I want to see go back to Mexico are illegal aliens, legal residents who still have loyalty to Mexico, and the people who are urging Hispanics to stay home tomorrow. That's it. I'd imagine you don't fall into any of the above categories.

Exactly - if they were so put-off, they would just go home.....

I do wonder, though - just how reliant on the illegal labor is California's economy? How long would it take for California to "catch-up" if somehow all the illegals went home (or were packed up and shipped back home)?
