Mofaz: 22 suicide bombings averted since October

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told the Economic and Industrial forum meeting in Tel Aviv Friday that 22 attempted suicide attacks were averted since the Maxim bombing in Haifa in October. He also described the Geneva Initiative as "a crack in Israeli society that must be severely dealt with, and told audience members that the security fence would be completed by 2004.

Meanwhile, Palestinians fired two anti-tank missiles at an IDF patrol on the Karni – Netzarim route in the Gaza Strip, and An IDF post near Netzarim came under fire, slightly damaging the structure.

Hundreds of people are expected to show up for an event in support of Gaza Strip settlements and against their evacuation.

And the IDF spokesman denied reports of firefights early Friday between Palestinians and IDF troops in Jenin.

Earlier, Palestinian sources report gunfights between IDF forces and Palestinians in Jenin, during army operations in the town, Friday. The IDF enforced a closure on Jenin in the early hours of the morning; however, the army reported only routine operations, and no exchange of fire.

Overnight Thursday, IDF forces destroyed the home of Ahmed Abu Dosh, an Islamic Jihad member, in Durah – a village south of Hebron. Dosh was among those responsible for the shooting of Israelis in Hebron's Worshipper's Way over a year ago, and for several other terror attacks.

A mortar shell was fired Friday morning at a settlement in northern Gaza Strip – the second in one hour. No casualties or damage were reported.
