U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, an outspoken critic of the countrys current immigration policies, called President Bush's immigration reform proposals "dangerous and unworkable."
Tancredo, who represents Colorados 6th district, criticized the Bush plan for not including tougher border controls and for offering legal status to people currently here illegally. He predicted that the plan would be rejected by Congress. Tancredo is chair of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus.
"It is dangerous to offer additional incentives and rewards for illegal immigration while giving only lip service to border security," said Tancredo.
Tancredo said an amnesty program in 1986 lacked sufficient border controls and encouraged a new wave of illegal immigration. Tancredo says illegal workers should be required to apply for legal status in their home country and then return home at the end of their employment.
"The guest worker program the president proposes is transparently unworkable without genuine border security," Tancredo noted. "Neither Mexicans nor anyone else will go through the hassle and paperwork of seeking legal jobs as long as the border is porous and employers can ignore the laws with impunity."
Tancredo said the Bush proposal would encourage more illegal immigration from job seekers and also leave the country vulnerable to terrorists who may enter the country undetected.

Dangerous? It's a total sell out of the American worker. If there were any doubts, this proposal has erased them.

The end of our health problem is near. Let in any doctor that can speak English, watch the price of health care drop into the tank. What?? We can't do that? It would ruin the income of the citizen doctors? Bush just seems to want competition for the people on the bottom rung of the ladder. Oh well. The unwashed masses get it put to them again.

Hate to tell you, but they're already trying to pass a new L class visa...seems there's such a shortage of medical personel that we need to let in INDIAN help, much like there was a Techie shortage....

I did not have the opportunity to hear the president's speech, and want to read it before commenting. In addition, I would like to revisit the "first" amnesty program (by any other name) and each successive one, and all the arguments pro and con. I suspect that Michelle Malkin may have already done that in her book.
I know what my gut feeling is, but if I felt the need to rant I can go to DU.

I work at a Police station and we had an "UNDOCUMENTED Worker" ((that's the politically correct jargon isnt it??)) Who had no license. No sooner did the officer get him into the station and he told the Officer.
"You are violating my Constitutional Rights"
He was able to say it, I wonder if he knew what it meant.
A forshadow of things to come.

Illegals have more rights than American citizens have.

Bush appeared as a strong President after 9-11--landed on
an aircraft carrier after implimenting a strong response to
the terrorism. But his policy as reflected by his appointed
Tom Ridge -- "Find a way to make it legal." speaks to more
than just the Bush policy toward Mexico delNorte. And it is a dangeous policy -- for it seeks to find a way to declare legal--what is not fair. Legal immigration is not the problem.Ranch Rescue ,and citizen groups like that, are NOT
the problem calling Illegal immigrants -undocumented workers
to "make it legal" is the problem.
To: cynicom
Why let in foreign doctors when we can just license everyone who wants to practice medicine?

amnesty under any other name is stil amnesty. calling an
Illegal immigrant an undocumented worker -in order to
"make it legal" does not change the fact any more than
calling same sex marriage -- Civil union --to make it legal
changes the facts.

I don't like this plan either, but I heard something on the radio this morning that made me think perhaps there is more to this than I had imagined.
The guy was explaining that, through this plan, 'we' (the government, of course) will actually know more about illegal workers than we do now. I still don't like it, but perhaps it is not quite the security risk I had initially thought.
