Crowd Joins to Jeer Bush Speech
UC Berkeley students and professors at the Institute of Governmental Studies reacted critically to President Bushs State of the Union Address yesterday with jeers and laughter.
In an annual tradition, pundits and spectators alike jammed the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies Library last night to scarf down pizza and scoff at President Bushs annual State of the Union Address. UC Berkeley political science professor Nelson Polsby set the tone for the evening with a defiant taunt for the Republican-controlled Congress.
They have the White house, Congress and the Supreme Court, but they dont have Berkeley, he proclaimed.
Amid snickers and chuckling from viewers, Bush delivered the televised address, stressing the war on terror and the continued threat of a terrorist attack on the United States.
We have not come all this waythrough tragedy, and trial and waronly to falter and leave our work unfinished, Bush said. Americans are rising to the tasks of history, and they expect the same from us.
A reference to the Kay report, which identified dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities in Iraq, drew jeers from the crowd.
Confronting a key re-election issue, Bush said his tax cut packages have lifted the economy into a rebound and implored Congress to make them permanent.
Yeah, but where are the jobs? called out a student wearing a Howard Dean T-shirt in the back of the room.
Addressing an issue he has tight-walked, Bush extended a hand to conservative supporters by pledging to ban gay marriage, but only if activists judges pressed the issue.
A strong America must also value the institution of marriage, Bush said. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization.
Other policy proposals Bush revealed include increased funding for abstinence programs for teenagers and a request to set aside funding for faith-based charities.
Hisses and groans from the crowd at the Institute of Governmental Studies persisted throughout the speech. A shot of Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., shaking his head drew the loudest cheers.
After the speech a few people lingered in the room chatting about Bushs potential Democratic rival.
If you find the guy with the right message, and its not Dean, you have a chance, said Matt Davis, assistant program director of the Center on Politics.

They have the White house, Congress and the Supreme Court, but they dont have Berkeley, he proclaimed. Seems like they're overdue for an earthquake in that part of the country.

The same place they were in the Clinton administration. That is on paper and in the mind of some politically motivated statistician somewhere.

Yeah, but where are the jobs? called out a student wearing a Howard Dean T-shirt in the back of the room. Get real...you go to school at Berkley....the entire country knows you'll suffer from arrested development for the next 20 years, and you have no intention of working during that time.

While I disagree with them..I won't denigrate them all too much. They're pretty much children experiencing their first taste of freedom from home.
They have yet to make the transition to the real world. Sadly, many of those pictured will never come to the understanding that others died, allowing them to revel in their ignorance.

In 1972, I visited friends who lived in the Potrero Hills section of San Francissy. They took me to Berkely one sat. afternoon because I wanted to see the campus. It was not that much different from U.T. Austin where I had just finished school. My buddy and I went to a bar just off campus for a pitcher of dark Olie. It was a jock bar, Berkeley football players, and probably the only one. Most of the team was there watching the 1972 summer olympics. They were watching the heavyweight boxing finals and our guy, Dwayne Bobick, was getting the poop pounded out of him by the great Cuban champion, Teofilio Stevenson. I remember Bobick being horribly bloodied and I believe the match was stopped though I am not sure. In any case the Cuban won and that prompted a huge roar of support from the football team. They were ecstatic because the commie had won. Suddenly I knew that though I was in California and specifically Berkely, I was really somewhere east of eden.

They have the White house, Congress and the Supreme Court, but they dont have Berkeley, he proclaimed. As if the left was about having anything and settling on anything peacefuly... talk about Berkley oxymoron. These people do not even understand their own fcked up ideology.
Unfreakingbelievable morons pretending to be of higher education, pot calling the kettle black at Bush.
