I notice that it has utilized the latest in Indian Engineering and Materials Sciences to lighten the heavy armor by attaching large hot-air balloons.

T-90?

If this is the first indigeniously produced tank, Why isn't it a T-1?

Or were the previous attempts so disasterous that they are ashamed to annouce the failures?

Some of you may not know this, but the guy on the tank is Apu Ghandi. He works third shift at the QuickeeMart in St. Louis. He is a personal friend of Hillie Clinton and is on military leave of absence as a result of having his unit called up by the Mumbai National Guard (MNG).

For proper appreciation of tanks, enjoy this as well.

I've always found the third stanza moving...

And if we are abandoned
By that unfaithful luck
And if we don't return
To our homeland again
If a bullet strikes us down
If our fate calls on us
Yes calls on us
Then our tank will give us
A metal grave

Because it is a Russian tank. It was just only built in India in agreement with the Russians.

Thanks. I get that song stuck in my head all the time. There is a roofing company here locally that uses it for their radio ads. Except it puts in the words "Roof, roof, roof, we love to roof.... the men who love to roof." I'm probably the only person who knows where the heck that is taken from. I laugh whenever I see that movie and see the guy from Adam 12 as a Nazi tanker.

If this is the first indigeniously produced tank, Why isn't it a T-1?

It is a Russian designed variant of the T-72, with a less powerful engine than the T-80.

"Initially seen as an entirely new design, the production model is in fact based on the T-72BM, with some added features from the T-80 series. The T-90 features a new generation of armor on its hull and turret. Two variants, the T-90S and T-90E, have been identified as possible export models."

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/t-90.htm

They are assembled locally from Russian kits, after India originally purchased a number of pre-built models.

"India on Wednesday rolled out the first locally-assembled T-90 as part of a deal with its main arms supplier Russia to put together as many as 186 such frontline battle tanks in the next few years, officials here said.

"Russia has already supplied 124 off-the-shelf T-90s worth 650 million dollars after signing the mammoth military deal in 2001 to help India to upgrade its ageing T-72 tanks, which has scant protection against nuclear attacks.

What protection does this tank offer against nuclear attacks that the others didn't? Better air filtration to protect from fallout? That is about the only place where I think they could significantly improve protection from that type of weapon. Just my uneducated guess.
