India's technology industry has attacked proposed new US legislation that bans the outsourcing of federal work to low cost countries arguing it is a protectionist measure contrary to the spirit of free trade.
The move by the US Senate coincides with decisions by a number of foreign companies to halt further outsourcing to India because of a new domestic tax ruling that would enable the Indian government to tax part of their worldwide earnings.

I agree. My reason for posting is, IMO it will be interesting/telling to see whether GWB signs this or not.

Wow. India wants free trade. That must mean that the Texans can sell their basmati rice there. Right?
To: Attention Surplus Disorder
Make sure you keep repeating the mantra! The problem is not jobs leaving the country, it is not capital equipment leaving the country, the problem is not intellectual property leaving the country, the problem is not contracts going to communistic/fascistic/socialistic government run countries that prop up their companies with government funds to defer losses that the US companies cannot compete against...
THE PROBLEM IS YOUR ATTITUDE ABOUT IT!! JUST KEEP TELLING YOURSELF THINGS WILL GET BETTER AND THEY WILL!
To: DeaconBenjamin
If you read the article (and I'm not saying you or anyone else did or didn't) it implies a convoluted jurisdictional rat's nest whereby India is apparently aiming to obtain taxing authority over GEs' (for example) worldwide earnings unless GE can show their IT operations outsourced there are "arm's length" transactions from their "normal" operations....it's not just the US Gov's ability or not to outsource IT work there. That (the taxing angle) may well be the bigger story. Ya mean...GE builds a jet engine and outsources the compilation of the parts list to workers in India...and India thereby obtains taxing rights to GEs' profits on the engine itself...? Hopefully; I may be misinterpreting this.

I heard of outsourcing after i bought a Dell, my mistake.

What irked me about this was the implication that the Indian IT industry now feels like thay have some sort of entitlement to "off-shorable" work and our withholding it is a "trade war" type of move.
Other than that, and especially after looking at that list of cos who outsource overseas, methinks the cat is already too far out of the bag on this issue.

I marvel ever more at the wisdom of the founding fathers. By limiting Federal monies to tarrifs, they also insured that foreign companies could not undersell US companies with as much ease.

*PING* Look at this BS list or outsourcers!
Since some of them are already blacklisted for their tiny percentage of offshored contracts, they might as well go all the way and offshore as much as they like. There is no fortune 500 company in America that is no responsible for offshoring, directly or indirectly.

60 Minutes had a report on how GE, Halliburton and others have not only spread themselves silly, some of their investments and partnerships can be found in countries like Syria and Iran.
The U.S. cant hold France and Russias links to Iraq and other problem countries over their heads for the problem of the pot calling the kettle black.
Sure, it was 60 Minutes, but these allegations are too heavy to be immediately dismissed out of hand.
If the greatest financial powers have forsaken their homeland for decentralized globalization, how can we expect the politicians they throw wads of cash at to resist their example?

the greatest financial powers have forsaken their homeland for decentralized globalization The cat was out of this bag by the early 80s when Jack Welch became GE chairman and promptly initiated a promotional campaign of intense 'globaloney' within the management ranks.
