Jackson visit makes it bad day to skip class (Gypsy Jackson alert!)

The Rev. Jesse Jackson surprised a class of Spelman College students Monday, lecturing about voting and civil rights for a new show on MTV's college network.

The show, called "Stand-In," brings celebrities onto campuses to teach classes and will air on MTVU, which recently changed its name from College Television Network and is available on college campus cable networks.

Jackson, who ran for president in 1984 and 1988, stood in for associate political science professor Marilyn Davis and spent an hour outlining the history of blacks and voting. "You have the power to make a difference," he said to 40 rapt students, noting that 600,000 African-Americans in Georgia are not registered to vote.

Davis succeeded in keeping Jackson's appearance under wraps. "I thought we were going to have a quiz," said Leslie Benjamin, a 20-year-old Spelman junior. Jackson's lecture had its desired effect on her: "I'm going to register to vote."

Surprisingly, Jackson said he isn't planning to endorse any particular Democratic candidate during the primary season. And as for Al Sharpton's campaign, Jackson told Buzz: "I can't pass judgment. I don't know enough about it."

Jackson's visit will air on MTVU the week of Feb. 16.

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

He doesn't know much about Al's campaign?

Does he have a brain?

I know that was just meant as an evasion, but don't insult our intelligence, Jesse.

Too bad Leslie's quote didn't end this way: "I'm going to register to vote and make sure someone this nuts never comes close to the presidency again."
