There's an earlier thread here.

For those interested I posted a list of all the Presidents of the Continental Congress and the Presidents of the United States in Congress Assembled.

The office titles give the clue as to why Washington was the first POTUS. There wasn't a chief executive until the Constitution was put in place.

You are quite correct. Under the Articles, the "Presidents" were the presiding officers of the Congress of the Confederation.
