Indonesia makes plans to build nuclear plant

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government plans to build its first nuclear power plant in 2016, with a capacity of 600 megawatts, to meet a growing demand for power, an official said.

Electricity and energy utilization director general Yogo Pratomo said that based on a study by the Batan Atomic Research Center, the project is highly feasible. Yogo said the plan is being discussed between government agencies but the people and the environment need to be prepared to accept the project as a profitable one.

Indonesia has been long ready with human resources to build the project, Pratomo said, adding that preparation for the project, however, is still in the earliest stage and has not yet come to calculating costs.

Earlier the government said it planned to build its first nuclear plant on the Muria hill foot in Central Java. The plan, however, has been delayed several times, originally set to be completed in 2007.

So they definitely ruled out solar, wind, tidal or geothermal alternatives completely.
