Daschle - "We have a path to 51 seats." -

the quote from Hotline is in the "Full Story" below.

Why Senate Dems ::

"At the beginning of the current Congress a year ago, there was a lot of skepticism that we could take back the Senate in 2004. We heard it not just from our friends in Labor, political pundits and donors, but also among ourselves."

A Democratic majority in '04 seemed "out of reach. Bush was strong, our presidential prospects were uncertain and our Senate candidates unknown."

Bush and Karl Rove envisioned their "Dream Team" of Senate recruits, including: Jennifer Dunn in WA; Mike Huckabee in AR; Ed Shafer in ND; Jim Gibbons in NV; Tommy Thompson in WI and Rudy Giuliani in NY.Not one of those races materialized. But with few exceptions, Republicans have failed in their recruiting efforts.

And where they have failed, we have exceeded expectations." Daschle singled out Tony Knowles in AK, Brad Carson in OK, Erskine Bowles in NC, Inez Tenenbaum in SC, Joe Hoeffel in PA and Nancy Farmer in MO. Daschle then proclaimed:

"We have a path to 51 seats." Daschle also noted that according to "polling available today, we lead in 7 of the 8 most competitive races of the cycle. ... If the elections were held today, we would be in the majority." [Hotline,2/2/04]

So, little Tommy has thrown down the gauntlet, eh? I guess he's just not worried at all about those 5 seats in the south?

Thanks for post. Daschle is full of crap. His path is more likely to 43 or 44 seats, and he may lose his, too.

Good thing the elections are not held today in the middle of the Democrat - only media blitz.

Well he is right to a degree about the recruitment efforts. We need to work on this. It will be a hard senate race this year.

He's got a point about the GOP having some recruiting failures. They're leaving Reid in Nevada essentially without an opponent --- outrageous. And Dunn ought to be running in Wash state.

Ri-i-i-ight. He wants South Dakotans to believe that he'd be the Great and Powerful Senate Majority Leader again, when in reality, he probably won't be kept on as minority leader after November.
