NEW YORK (AP) -- The one-second flash of Janet Jackson's breast at the Super Bowl could end up putting the brakes on years of plunging standards in the down-and-dirty entertainment industry.

"This particular event might be, for the moment, the straw that broke the camel's back on the patience of the audience," said talk show host Carson Daly, a veteran presence on MTV, which produced the offending halftime show. "Tolerance of this sort of sexual imagery may have reached its peak."

Shock and titillation in popular culture is nothing new.

True, but the entire nation saw Janet Jackson's titillation....

The problem was context! If I choose to watch MTV or HBO, or porn, that's my choice. But the expectation when sitting down to watch what was a great football games is NOT to be titillated.

"A banker from Knoxville, Tenn., filed a class action lawsuit..."

I hate this lawsuit based society. You do not have a right to not have your feelings hurt or never feel upset. I really wish I were a judge so I could say that in a ruling.

Yeah, I'm not all that fond of it, either, but it's interesting to me that the right is beginning to adopt the tactics that the left has been using for the past 40 years....

Haw Haw. Carson Daley used to be a DJ on the radio in Houston. He produced the half time show? Bump him down to the mailroom.

TV executives are also desperate to reach a young audience; it's no coincidence that CBS and the NFL turned to MTV, the network of "Punk'd" and "Jackass," to produce its halftime show, said social historian Neal Gabler.

Plain and simple Viacom owns CBS and MTV. If it had been FOX again or NBC or even ABCDisney, MTV would NOT have been in the mix.

I searched around to see what station he was with here and didn't see it on any of his bios. Maybe it was an insignificant part of his career?

-The NFL cut a halftime production number by one of Timberlake's 'N Sync bandmates, JC Chasez, planned for Sunday's Pro Bowl in Honolulu, because Chasez's song contained the words "horny" and "naughty." He'll be replaced by hula dancers and local singers.

Now that is too funny!

Methinks the whole purpose by CBS and Jackson was to help the other
white Jackson beat his child rape charges
by ridding the jury of peers who might have been bothered by the sister's flash.

"The excision of that (`ER') scene shows that people have not grown up enough to make a distinction between artistic expression and vulgarity for profit,"

Actually it's the networks and the entertainment industry that are unable to make distinctions between "art" and vulgarity. That's why the networks are taking this week's shotgun approach.

And while the media is almost universally trying to make this about Jackson's breast (with the exception of Bozell, above), the truth is that the entire halftime show was a calvalcade of debauchery, vulgarity, humping and simulated sex, garter belts, and crotch findling. Janet's breast was merely icing on the cake.

"The excision of that (`ER') scene shows that people have not grown up enough to make a distinction between artistic expression and vulgarity for profit," Kaplan said. "That's what happens in the context of a witch hunt."

It didn't take long for the kneejerk "witch hunt" remarks to come out, did it?

"O Lord, please save us from the politicians jockying for power during this election year!"

Watch for more moralizing and self-righteous hurrumphing from the corrupt politicians in Washington as the year drags on into November. Gotta look tough on sin for the little old ladies in the quilting circle, dontcha know.

The left has not only been using it, but has exploited and loosened the system to the point of crazy. Good for the right by finally turning this system on its supporters and let's hear them cry foul to the very precedents their beloved ACLU and others have put in motion.

I think what she did was stupid and tasteless. Young children shouldn't be exposed to this.

HOWEVER, it was not much different than Madonna and Britaany Spears "tongue kissing" which is far worse, or the innumerable sexual innuendos on prime-time sitcomes by people like Norman Lear and his clones who target young audiences with sexually oriented material and nonesense about little kids being smarter than their parents.

I am no prude and on Cable TV if some morons on MTV want to show this offcolor stuff, all well and good - waste your time and watch it. But major newschannels should be held accountable for this kind of stuff.

As for Ms. Jackson, what do you expect? Like most entertainers she lives in an insulated wordl, divorced from reality. She is incapable of making intelligent decisions for herself (in this respect she resembles University professors, attorneys, judges and Democratic politicians).

The person who should be crucified for this is Les Moonves (IS that his REAL name?) along with all the head honchos at CBS who pre-approved this stunt.

How do you turn off the Super Bowl?" Copps asked.

You press the Off button. I managed. Try it, you'll like it. And if enough people do it, we'll have less of this. And we wouldn't need the FCC.

No, it said he was a former VJ on MTV. MTV produced the halftime show... They blur the lines in this article.

How does a flapjack boob make ER better quality viewing? Im not a huge fan of the show, but its a well produced show and has big ratings. So why the need for adding boobs when the scene can be done without it?

Its rhetorical...

The real issue here is CONTROL... when a commercial comes on; parents of today generally know the content and character of today's productions and quickly mute or change channels, they know what’s coming, they’re in control.

Some parents likely suspected that the half time show would be crass and probably boring, and so, turned it off during half time. But those who took a chance to watch with their kids could not have been prepared for the blitzkrieg of Jackson's boob. No warning, just flop, "they it izz".

Some may wish to argue that we’re too squeamish, or complain that it's just "dump on the Jackson's", but I guarantee you that, it is not the loving parent who purports those views. It's the "pimps of progress, (read perversion)" of our modern times. Progress to them is unbridled promiscuity and perversion of traditional norms. To them, we stand in the way of their wishes to do anything they want in the public square. In fact, it is a battle, and their weapon of choice is shock via the profane; to hear our shrieks of disgust to them are ecstasy and glory.

This then is a battle between, the pimps of progress and people of morality. They can have their little enclave of perversity, but don't let them foist it on us or our children. So we fight back... the class action lawsuit is exactly the vehicle. Make them pay dearly for assaulting us with their trashy pimpish antics.
