Must be a long winter up there. Can't imagine a fight breaking out over who is or isn't wearing a face guard. Oh, wait a minute... we're talking about hockey. Never mind.

"It's a funny thing they don't want the Canadian flag, but they want our money. I've never seen such a bunch of whiners in my life," he said in 1998 after complaints that there were too many Canadian flags on view at the Nagano Olympics.

He also described freestyle skier Jean-Luc Brassard, who was Canada's flag-bearer at Nagano, as "a French guy, some skier that nobody knows about."

I guess it's not nice to tell the truth in Canada...

You know, every single person who's a member of the Free Republic would have to be censored on Canadian TV...

The government-controlled CBC network is about as liberal as can be. When that snowboarder from Canada tested positive for pot at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, there were several CBC announcers making a hero out of him, spending hour after hour glorifying the kid at the expense of all the other Canadian athletes.

Don Cherry was the only CBC employee who went on the air and told kids that they shouldn't do drugs and shouldn't hang around others who use drugs. Cherry was actually yelling into the camera: STAY AWAY FROM THE STUFF. IT'S NO GOOD!

But in Canada, that kind of common-sense advice is considered by most hosers to be intolerant and ignorant.

The CBC was also mad at Cherry after he criticized the Canadian government for its opposition to the USA's war in Iraq. Cherry said he could understand not sending troops, but he couldn't understand the lack of at least verbal support for a reliable and loyal neighbor like the U.S.

I've been wishing for several years now that Cherry would move down here and become a commentator on a U.S. network. Our country would be a better place with him in it.

Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song) Lyrics

He was born in Big Beaver by the borderline
He started playing hockey by the time he was nine
His dad took the hose and froze the back yard
And Little Buddy dreamed he was Rocket Richard
He grew up big and he grew up tough
He saw himself scoring for the Wings or Canucks
But he wasn't that good with a puck

Buddy's real talent was beating people up
His heart wasn't in it but the crowd ate it up
Through pee-wee's and juniors, midgets and mites
He must have racked up more than three hundred fights
A scout from the flames came down from Saskatoon
Said, "There's always room on our team for a goon
Son, we've always got room for a goon"

There were Swedes to the left of him
Russians to the right
A Czech at the blue line looking for a fight
Brains over brawn--that might work for you
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?

Hit somebody! was what the crowd roared
When Buddy the goon came over the boards
"Coach," he'd say, "I wanna score goals"
The coach said, "Buddy, remember your role
The fast guys get paid, they shoot, they score
Protect them, Buddy, that's what you're here for

Protection is what you're here for
Protection--it's the stars that score
Protection--kick somebody's ass
Protection--don't put the biscuit in the basket just
Hit some, Buddy! it rang in his ears
Blood on the ice ran down through the years
The king of the goons with a box for a throne
A thousand stitches and broken bones
He never lost a fight on his icy patrol
But deep inside, Buddy only dreamed of a goal
He just wanted one damn goal

There were Swedes at the the blue line
Finns at the red
A Russian with a stick heading straight for his head
Brains over brawn--that might work for you
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?

In his final season, on his final night
Buddy and a Finn goon were pegged for a fight
Thirty seconds left, the puck took a roll
And suddenly Buddy had a shot on goal

The goalie committed, Buddy picked his spot
Twenty years of waiting went into that shot
The fans jumped up, the Finn jumped too
And coldcocked Buddy on his follow through
The big man crumbled but he felt all right
'Cause the last thing he saw
was the flashing red light
He saw that heavenly light

There were Swedes to the left of him
Russians to the right
A Czech at the blue line looking for a fight
Take care of your teeth--that might work for you
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?
But what's a Canadian farm boy to do?
What else can a farm boy from Canada do?

Jean Augustine, minister of state for multiculturalism:

Canada's official languages commissioner? Minister of state for multiculturalism?

OMG is canada in deep trouble or what? From the title I thought maybe the guy was quoting bible verses or something. After all, it is considered hate speech isn't it?

I think Don should quit doing his segment on the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada. Then the ratings will plumet. It's a big sports market out there, he won't be out of work long being that he is a Canadian hero. Maybe Bush could give him the job of press secretary. The socialists hate him up here because he calls it like it is, especially concerning Iraq and Europeans.

I would think CTV or TSN would be quick to offer "Grapes" a hefty contract for his services.

I live in the United States and was able to pick up the CBC for several years on a C-band satellite dish. During the regular season - when I wasn't really interested in watching meaningless NHL games for three hours at a time - I would often just turn on the CBC at about the time of the first intermission to catch Cherry's "Coach's Corner" segment.

It sounds like he would be perfect for Hockey Night in The US.

The Queerbecers can't stand Cherry. Too bad. He hits a home run in most of his commentary but especially on this one!

He hits a home run in most of his commentary but especially on this one!

Back in the seventies he said: "If the NHL doesn't put a stop to all this fighting every team will have to build a bigger arena."

Cherry has always been a fun guy. Sometimes he says the stupidest things, but in reality he is a great analyst.

" "I find it despicable, I am hurt. People have got to stop continually resorting to these kinds of stereotypes," said Mr. Coderre, who is from Quebec."

I think you just made the Coach's point, pantywaist.

... his comment on "Hockey Night in Canada" that "most of the guys that wear [visors] are European or French guys" sparked a backlash.

Anyone remember the great Montreal Canadian goalie Jacque Plant? He was the first goalie to wear a mask, albeit primitive by todays standards.

That episode was on last night. I had previously see it. This time my 16 year old son watched it with me. If you can stomach the gross nature of the subject matter, it is one of the most damning indictments of what "tolerance" hath wrought.
