"Colonia" is a spanish term for "neighborhood" or "community." In Texas, "colonia" refers to an unincorporated settlement that often lacks basic water and sewer systems, paved roads, and safe and sanitary housing. Drilled some gas wells in a community like this once. Didn't know it was there until we went to stake the first well - had to buy some lots from the lawyer promoting it for the surface locations.
