Joe Frazier arrested for assault

PHILADELPHIA - Former boxing heavyweight champion Joe Frazier was arrested on Friday and charged with assaulting a woman.

The victim was described in police documents as the mother of Frazier's son, department spokesman Corporal Jim Pauley said. The 44-year-old woman was not seriously injured and refused medical treatment, police said.

The 60-year-old boxing great was awaiting arraignment on charges of simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Frazier was the world champion from 1970 to 1973, and fought Muhammad Ali in three classic heavyweight bouts, winning once and losing twice. He was also the heavyweight gold medalist at the 1964 Olympics.

Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said officers responded to a 911 emergency call. When they arrived, the woman who opened the door had injuries to her lip and face and said Frazier struck her, he added.

Regulations require officers to make an arrest if there is a physical injury to someone making a domestic violence complaint.

The former boxer was taken to police headquarters rather than the local precinct because he has diabetes and headquarters has medical equipment, Mr Johnson said

He's always been a jerk. The difference between Joe and Ali is that Ali acted like he did because it sold tickets. Joe was just mean.

That right hook would still fell like being hit by a freight train even at 60 MPH, er, 60 years old.

Frazier's big punch was the left hook, but your point is well taken.

I works perfectly, of course.

Frazier was one of my favorite fighters of that era, so this news is a bit depressing.

I liked Frazier, but for pure mouth, no one could touch Ali. And I remember when Ali tried to pull off Cosell's toupee---great moments in sports TV.

Of course, I grew up watching Friday night fights sponsored by Gillette with my dad. I had no clue as to what was going on, of course, but I was allowed to stay up late AND eat buttered popcorn while my sisters were sent off to bed.

He's always been a jerk

I had a chance meeting with Joe Frazier when I was in high school. I had a one-on-one with him for about 20 minutes and he was anything but a jerk. In fact, he had absolutely no reason to spend his time talking to me, but he did.
