Immigrant imprisoned for 22 years asks for visa

An illegal immigrant imprisoned 22 years for her role in the table-leg beating of a man who bought her as a sex slave wants a visa to stay in the United States.

Maria Suarez, paroled in December by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and turned over to immigration authorities, would be in danger if she is deported to Mexico, her attorney said Wednesday during a hearing at the San Pedro Service Processing Center.

Attorney Jessica Dominguez said Suarez, 43, was a victim of child and sex trafficking when she was sold for $200 to Anselmo Covarrubias when she was 16. Suarez was convicted in 1981 for hiding a table leg a neighbor used to kill the 68-year-old alleged witch doctor.

On Monday, Schwarzenegger denied a request by Suarez's attorney to grant a full pardon. In a letter to Dominguez, the governor's legal affairs secretary Peter Siggins wrote that Schwarzenegger "will not entertain a pardon" because when he released her from the California Institution for Women in Frontera, he thought she would live and work in Mexico.

Dominguez said Suarez would be in danger if she is sent back to Mexico, where those who are aware that she had something to do with the death of a witch doctor would cause her harm.

"We are seeking protection from that," the attorney said.

A hearing will be held April 23 to decide if Suarez will be deported.

What this article neglects to mention is that the governor's office approved of her early release when she indicated that she would willingly return to Mexico upon her release from prison.

Funny how she's now changing her tune and the governor is now being made out as the bad guy in this...
