LOS ANGELES (AP) - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," the colossal adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure, was crowned best-picture at Sunday's Academy Awards, the first fantasy flick ever to win the top Oscar.

Sean Penn won the best-actor honor for his perfomance as an ex-hoodlum who falls back on his criminal ways to exact revenge for his daughter's murder in "Mystic River." Watched the program...completely boring...couldn't stand it...can't stand the Mystic River people and their buddies...

I only watched it because I wanted to see the tribute to Katharine Hepburn, my all time favorite actress

Seems like the show's producers put the actors "under raps" to tone down the anti-Americanisms and anti-Bushisms. Still, a few crept out. At least Sarandon and Robbins kept a lid on it.

I enjoyed the Bob Hope tribute, Blake Edwards movie clips and the Hepburn flashback over the years and her many roles was well done.

Ecstatic for LOTR's sweep but disappointed that Charlize Theron won for "Monster" (Hollywood once again glorifies serial killers and murderers) also sorry Bill Murry lost the Best actor award to Sean Penn. It was sad, this was probably Bill's one and only shot at an Oscar and he deserved it.

In all fairness, I thought Billy tried to spread the pain around a bit at first.

But it is an election year after all, so some jabs were to be expected. Ol' Sean was shaking there for a bit about half way thru his speech, I thought he was gonna take another whack but he thought better.

I think the potential was there but fortunately cooler heads prevailed for the most part.

I'd like to see Steve Martin host or maybe Bill Murray next year.

Absolutely...I definitely was born in the wrong era (1981)...back then, actors and actresses were committed to the craft, movies were terrific, and most kept their comments to the craft, not to their twisted notions of the world and politics!

lol.. think of how the actors of the WW2 era, met the call to fight in Europe and the Pacific, and then compare it to the hollywood actors of today and how they disdain fighting for freedom.

yup, definitely a different time and place today.

Was it just me or did Roberts sneer while quoting Ms. Hepburn on the merits of their profession?

Charlize Theron took the best-actress for her perfomance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a highway prostitute executed for murdering some of her johns in "Monster."

Theron playing a serial killer in a film who portays her as the victim

Halle Berry's depraved character in "Monster's Ball"

Hillary Swank with a penis in the sickening "Boys Don't Cry"

See a pattern here? The Hollyweird left is sure putting the spotlight on wonderful roles to inspire our daughters.

I was expecting to hear Billy Crystal ridicule Mel Gibson and "The Passion of the Christ." From the news story I read it looks as if he didn't go after Gibson after all. Of course, it's hard to tell just reading some quotes. For those of you who saw the broadcast, here's what I wonder. Crystal was quoted as saying: "Mel Gibson's movie, unbelievable hit, $117 million. Opened on Ash Wednesday, had a Good Friday, a better Saturday and Sunday, unbelievable."

Now was this a sincere tribute to the movie's drawing power, an indication that Crystal was truly amazed that a film about Jesus would do so well? Or when he said twice said "unbelievable" was he somehow trying to suggest that it was the the movie itself that was unbelievable, not the gross?

I feel for Bill, too.

I just looked at the list of winners and I have not seen 1 of the films on the list,, But Lost in Translation is definitely one I will try and catch after seeing the clips. Master and Commander may get a shot too.

I haven't watched the Oscars in years, I'm with the poster that was talking about right around the '80s, but was at a house where it was on TV and happened to catch Blake Edwards accepting his honorary. It was hilarious! So Pink Panther!
