LE MONDE SWITCHES SIDES (Andrew Sullivan)

LE MONDE SWITCHES SIDES: An encouragig sign in France. Le Monde's editorial today, "Tragedie Europeenne," ends with the following sentiment: "If she did not know it yet, she knows it now: Europe is part of the battlefield of hyper-terrorism." Then there's this astonishing piece of black-and-white analysis: "Nothing, evidently, no cause, no context, no supposedly political objective, justifies this kind of [large scale] terrorism." Now they tell us. Whatever happened to all those sophisticated European "gray areas"? With any luck, they died in the wreckage of Madrid's trains. Here's another money quote from the French daily:

"If the trail back to Al-Qaida is confirmed, Europeans should rethink the war against Islamic fundamentalist terrorism, as did the United States after the attacks of September 11, 2001. . . . Will March 11 have in Europe the same effect as September 11 in the US? After having spontaneously expressed their solidarity with the Americans, the Europeans, preoccupied with other forms of terrorism, found that the Americans had become consumed with paranoia. Contrary to the latter in 2001, Europeans today discover not only their own vulnerability, but also that they are confronted with a new phenomenon, mass terrorism. Like the Americans, they may now be forced to admit that a new form of world war has been declared, not against Islam but against totalitarian and violent fundamentalism. That the world's democracies are confronted with the same menace and should act together, using military means and waging at the same time a war for their ideals."
One word: enfin.

Don't count on it. They "were all Americans now" on 9/12.

No, war has been declared by Islam against the west. Let's get it straight just who the aggressors are.

Chirac and his buddies will never admit they were wrong. Sadly, it may take something similar on French soil for them to come around.

This mood of sympathy will last for three or four days. That's about how long they sympathized with us. Then the Arabs will offer Chirac more oil money and he will happily take it.

France has been giving the ETA sanctuary on their side of the Alps, and I'm sure they'll be happy to provide the same service for Islamists.

They will rape us like a whore on La Rue Morgue until Paris itself is struck. And even then I wouldn't trust them.

France is going to get whacked by the terrorists, sooner or later! The Muslim terrorists want all the Jews and all the Christians in the world wiped off the face of the Earth. Maybe now with this horrible tragedy in Spain, the rest of the world will join in the fight against terrorism. You can bet one thing for sure. If John Kerry is elected President, the war against terror will be lost and thousands upon thousand of innocent Americans will lose their lives. You can bank that! the current Democrat Party needs to be destroyed at the ballot box this year!

Soon after 9/11 the French did suffer an Islamic bombing attack on a factory. They were deeply saddened for a few days - then forgot about it.

No problem-- there aren't any Christians in France, and if the French don't do a better job fighting anti-semitic Islamic violence, pretty soon there won't be any Jews either.

France won't 'get it' until the Eifel Tower is reduced to scrap metal. And even then, they still won't really get it.

How soon we forget that it was just a few days ago (this week) that bombs were found planted all over the french rail lines.

The French are more likely to reach an accommodation with al Qaida than they are to fight them.

i doubt THAT.

With the French having been informed of bombs on THIER railways just a few days ago, I expect that the next sound we hear is the ruffling of
beaucoup des Froggie Francs being paid off to appease Islamist thugs.

In response to the attacks in Madrid, the French have raised their terror alert level to white.

Weren't airports in France and Italy getting hit regularly by terrorists about 20 years ago?? I didn't care too much about politics then, but I remember that countries in Euorope were hit a lot by terrorists. Help me here, who got hit then and what is the difference now?
