NEW YORK (AP) -- Nearly a year after losing his job as executive editor of The New York Times, Howell Raines is defending his efforts to shake up the newspaper's culture and criticizing the paper's review into its own practices, saying it represents "an institution in denial."

Too bad he will not say which direction he pushed them.

"Pushing staff too hard" is not the problem. The problem is that they are all a bunch of partisan liars.

Yeah, no doubt, what about being the mouthpiece of the DNC? And taking orders from the Clintons?

Raines was a tyrant, firing senior staff left and right because they didn't fit his agenda. He fired Abe Rosenthal to make more room for Maureen Dowd to throw her tantrums.
Tyrants shouldn't be surprised if the peasants revolt when they get a chance.

The fit hit the shan on Raines' watch, but of course he, as executive editor, was blameless. Uh huh. Wasn't it Raines who brought Blair on board, promoting him way beyond his competence and experience? I think it was.
Mr. Raines calls the Times 'indispensable' and 'irreplaceable.'He got that one wrong, too. The NYT is indefensible and irresponsible, not that it matters to the brain-dead subscribers.
