The French lawyer who defended Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie and guerrilla Carlos the Jackal has confirmed he will defend Saddam Hussein.
Jacques Verge said Saddam's nephew had chosen him to represent the former Iraqi president.
Mr Verges, who is also defending former Iraqi deputy prime minister Tariq Aziz, said he would lead Saddam's defence, supported by a dozen other French lawyers.
In Baghdad, the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council is setting up a war crimes tribunal to try Saddam on charges which may include genocide and crimes against humanity.
Washington has said the 66-year-old Saddam, whose interrogation is being led by the CIA after US forces captured him in December, should be tried in Iraq.
Last month, the US declared Saddam a prisoner of war last month, meaning he has certain rights under the Geneva Convention on treatment of such detainees.

Interesting, we haven't heard a public word about Saddam since immediately after his capture. But I'd rather have a Texas Ranger interrogate Saddam than the CIA. The Rangers don't play political games.

Perfect choice. A French attorney defending the mass murderer ought to play well with Iraqis after months or years of discovery re: Oil for Food payola.

If those pictures adn story is real, President should make a public announcement and call the French out. He should tell them in no uncertain terms that we will treat this action in the future as an act of war.

Question: Are the Iraqi in the loop on this? Saddam should be tried (and, hopefully, executed) by the Iraqi people.
Or did the French just unilaterally decide to horn in?
