EVEN as members of the FCC and Congress conspire to keep programming they find disagreeable off the airwaves, radio badboys "Opie and Anthony" are planning a triumphant return.

Greg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia's raunchy syndicated afternoon radio show was pulled off the air by Infinity Broadcasting after they carried the sounds of a couple simulating sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral in 2002.

Many political experts say that the targeting of Stern and the recent "obscenity" hysteria could cost Bush white male voters across several key age demographics.
I'd question the "expert" status of anyone who doesn't think it will cost Bush votes. The truly sick thing is it won't gain him any.

It's provocative odd timing, as the Senate is set to vote on a so-called "anti-obscenity" bill that civil libertarians say is patently unconstitutional and will serve a severe blow to First Amendment rights.

Funny the media didn't have a problem with CFR.

I would venture a guess that anyone who would vote for GWB is not a regular listener of the Howard Stern show.

Agreed. I fail to see how this helps. I'm not sure how active I will support some candidates who have gone after Howard. Sitting on my hands might be an option.

I'd question the sanity of anyone who thinks that Bush has the slightest thing to do with Stern's woes. Last time I checked, Bush didn't own Clear Channel.

I could probably name twenty that voted for Bush in 2000, from my acquaintances alone. More if you include people that may not listen to Stern but like "indecent" entertainment.

Does Bush have any influence on the FCC?

Does the FCC have any influence on Clear Channel? Or, for that matter, Infinity?

Really? I personally can't stand Stern. To each his own.

Bush is the president, not a dictator. And considering that Bush has enough rats in his own administration, I'd say that assuming that he is in control of the FCC is completely baseless.

People who vote based on Stern's endorsement do not have the brain power required to find their way to the polling places.

Tell that to Rudy, Pataki and Whitman, all of whom credit Stern with helping them get elected, as Republicans.

And that is the extent of Stern's influence -- New York City and adjacent places. States Bush is not going to win anyway.

O&A back on? Best news I heard in a year. They were much better than Stern.

Stern is a blowhard of IMUS like proportions. O&A got on the air and had fun. It definitely is not a show for one with a high moral fiber. Then again, neither is Stern.

They got what they deserved with the St Patricks stunt.

Absolutely. I have strong objections to censorship, but my main worry here is this is going to cost us votes.

Reagan took firm control of his FCC and ensured that it reflected his basic view: that over-regulation was no better for broadcasting than it was for manufacturing. The popular culture got more "indecent" by the culture warrior definition, but the nation got healthier. More to the point, his support got broader. Ask Mondull.
