China, Dominica establish diplomatic ties

BEIJING: China and the Caribbean Commonwealth of Dominica have established diplomatic relations, China's foreign ministry announced early Tuesday.

Dominica has been one of the few allies of Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a breakaway province that should not be recognised as an independent country. Dominica had agreed to recognise the "one China" policy, which says that Taiwan is part of China. 'The government of the Commonwealth of Dominica recognizes that there is but one China in the world, that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Chinese territory," the ministry's communique said.

Well, if Mr. Chen is trying to alienate the allies of Taiwan, he has been successful.

Absolutely, and the 100 Mn aid package from China had nothing to do with it...

Anytime that China establishes relations with another country, there is always some money involved to line the handshake. That goes without saying...

So what is your take on Taiwan? Do you support Taiwan independence from China or not?

The money is really not the issue here, the principle is, the deal was evidently lined with another little condition, the withdrawal of support from Taiwan independence. I believe Dollar diplomacy or Renminbi diplomacy in this case is shortsighted at best, since they risk alienating other countries (and their aid) because of this deal.
