John Belushi gets Hollywood star

From correspondents in Los Angeles 02apr04

US COMIC and actor John Belushi has been immortalised on Hollywood's glamorous Walk of Fame, 22 years after he died of a drug overdose.

The Blues Brothers actor's gilt-edged star on the famed walk was unveiled by his emotional brother, Jim Belushi, who asked Hollywood's Chamber of Commerce to honour the late comic. "It's a great, great day today," said the 49-year-old Belushi, whose big brother John would have been 55 if he had survived. "It's great to have this star. Today we are retiring John's jersey. He is a walk of famer, man."

The ceremony was attended by a star-studded cast of characters who had worked with hard-partying John Belushi including fellow Blues Brother Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase and movie star Ted Danson.

Belushi was 33 when he died after being injected with a "speedball" - a deadly combination of cocaine and heroin - in Hollywood's elegant Chateau Marmont hotel after a night out in 1982.

Like Chase and Akroyd, the actor was one of the original cast members of the US television comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, which is still on the air.

He also starred in movies such as the classic 1978 comedy Animal House, directed by John Landis, who also attended Thursday's ceremony.

John Belushi was an enormous talent laid to waste by his own demons. So sad.

Nice...loser druggies are immortalized in pavement when talented, upstanding US citizens, like Condi Rice are vilified and 20 years from now will only (if even this) a page in history.

Belushi paid the ultimate price for being a "loser druggie."

You didn't. So what's your point?

I have actually stayed at the elegant Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood. Even stood outside of the bungalow where Belushi overdosed. I was there for a weekend back in 1993: There were several famous stars engaging in drug and sex activity. I caught glimpses of a famous black singer and the widow of a famous dead singer. They were all stoned out of their minds.

Far Out !

It is my understanding that these stars are purchased, not given. Whats the big deal, you are a star you buy the space in the sidewalk.

You must have not been able to read the entire post. Here it is again:

Yep. It's somewhere about 5 grand for a star. Maybe more for a prime location. Drew Barrymore got one next to her grandfather.

Don't even have to be real! Mickey Mouse has a star right in front of Mann's Chinese Theater. The Apollo 11 astronauts have a special plaque at Hollywood and Vine.

I get it. And I read the whole post.

And I still don't understand your point.

Paying homage to the talent of John Belushi doesn't have a damn thing to do with Condi rice. They'll each leave their own legacy... most likely in very different places.

There should more than enough good karma pie to give a good-sized piece to John Belushi without sending Condi home hungry.

Lighten up.

Condi Rice's job is to advise the president and help him make decisions that will hopefully save lives and help the U.S. These loser druggies chose acting and entertaining. If Condi Rice could sing and dance, she could get a star. I'd much rather have some crackhead getting a star on the walk, and keep Condi where she belongs, next to the president.

I heard that in order to achieve the maximum effect, the star will be covered with white powder.

It's said to have been the personal motto and a favorite saying of Caligula. It translates approximately to let them hate so long as they fear.
