CA: A spirited defense of the dubious

You ached for the president to say something like, "We made some mistakes and our intelligence was far from perfect. But we're there now, Saddam is gone, and we've got to get through the tough times. Experience has made us realistic enough to know we can't establish instant democracy. Democracy can't be established from the top, a people has to grow into it. But we can make sure Iraq in the foreseeable future is not the threat we thought it was, and give the Iraqi people a chance."

Unfortunately, the notes of humility and realism that might have made President Bush's Tuesday night address and press conference more credible were simply not there. His Wilsonian grand design, the conviction that America's mission is to bring democracy to a waiting world, prevailed. This, he said, is an "historic opportunity to change the world."

I don't think Democrats apologized after VE Day, when there was no viable nuclear research in Germany, which had otherwise motivated the Manhattan Project.

Instead, Truman turned around and dropped the resulting weapons on Japan.

You ached for a newspaper, any newspaper, to say something like,

"We told lies, enormous lies, because our intelligence was far from perfect due to the fact that we're silly Marxists. But we're almost through now, our readership is dying, the ads are drying up and even dogs won't pee on us. Experience has made us realistic enough to know we can't continue lying, day, after day, after day. But we'll continue to lie till the end. That's all we have left - propaganda, disinformation and exaggeration, written by pompous asses. In truth, our mothers should wash our mouths out with soap, but alas, it will never happen. We sold them out, too. But you can make sure in the foreseeable future that we are not the threat we think we are. Don't buy us. Don't read us. And for Pete's sake stop buying bird cages. Then you'll realize our true worth - nothing. Nothing at all."
