Greenpeace activists prevent soybean loading

Group stops mixing of genetically altered, natural beans on ship

Saturday, May 8, 2004 Posted: 8:07 PM EDT (0007 GMT)

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- A freighter left Brazil's southern port of Paranagua on Saturday after Greenpeace environmental activists tied themselves to mechanical loaders to prevent the ship from mixing conventional soybeans with genetically modified grain.

The freighter's destination wasn't immediately known. It had originally been bound for Turkey, Greenpeace said.

The activists, all members of the environmental group Greenpeace, chained themselves to the top of the loaders at 11:30 p.m. Friday, shortly before the Global Wind docked in the port, 375 miles (600 kilometers) south of Rio de Janeiro, a representative for the group said.

The loaders take the grain from silos to freighters.story.greenpeace.ap.jpg

A Greenpeace activist hangs from a ship loader Saturday in Paranagua, Brazil.

According to Greenpeace, the ship was already carrying 30,000 tons of genetically modified soybeans and came to Paranagua to add another 10,000 tons of natural product, all destined for Turkey.

"It is a great day for us. It tells us it is possible to keep this port clean of genetically modified grain," said Greenpeace spokeswoman Mariana Paoli, interviewed from Paranagua by telephone. "We are acting to protect our soy production from contamination with the genetically modified product."

The activists tied to the loaders said they began to celebrate the departure of the ship as soon as they noticed it was readying to leave.

"It is a victory for us. We couldn't be happier," Leticia Camargo, one of the Greenpeace activists, told The Associated Press by telephone. She said she was speaking from the top of one of the loaders as the Global Wind was departing.

1. CUT THE CHAINS AND TETHERS THAT SECURE THE ACTIVIST FREAKS.

2. IF THEY DON'T FALL TO THEIR DEATHS, ARREST THEM.

3. PUT THME INTO A HOLDING CELL WITH ALL OF THE OTHER 'OPPRESSED' MEMBERS OF BRAZIL'S CRIMINAL CLASS.

4. TRY THEM IN A BRAZILLIAN COURT OF LAW.

5. PUT THEM IN PRISON FOR SABOTAGING LAWFUL COMMERCE AND THROW AWAY THE KEY - WHO CARES IF THEY ARE 18 YEARS OLD AND ON STUDENT SPRING BREAK.

6. SHIP YOUR PRODUCT TO YOUR MARKET AS YOU SEE FIT.

Media Feeds Scare over Genetically Modified Products
June 30, 2003

Demonstrable by scientific evidence and practical experience, any real or imagined hazards of genetically modified [GM] agricultural products are far outweighed by the benefits. Nonetheless, they have been the subject of highly politicized attacks by 'activist' organizations, politicians and special interest groups. A compliant media has gleefully fanned the flames.

...Fox News reports Zimbabwe and Tanzania rejected tons of donated of GM foodstuffs last year, partly due to European pressure as well as an apparently successful "international propaganda campaign." Greenpeace's estranged co-founder Patrick Moore characterizes this mindset as saying "it is better a million people starve to death" than use foods that have been safely consumed elsewhere for several years now...

...Genetically modified crops have been successfully demonstrated to reduce pesticide, fertilizer and herbicide use, thus reducing chemical exposure to the soil, water table and farm workers. Tillage is also less necessary, thus minimizing erosion. One would think such benefits would be desirable to self-styled enviro groups...

The final paragraph: "Brazil's conventional soy exports go mainly to Europe, where genetically modified soy is banned because of uncertainty over the long-term health effects."

What exactly are the Euros concerned about? Anybody know?

Beats me why Euros would be concerned about unknown health effects of genetically modified variants of soy and yet ignore the known (and deleterious) health effects of soy consumption in the first place.

If I were a betting woman I'd bet the answer is found in just two words: farm subsubsitites. After all, "Follow the money."

Load the ship. If any eco-freak gets caught in the machinery, just label that batch "Atkins Friendly."

Since the days of Luther Burbank's experiments with peas, we have been eating genetically modified plants and animals. These morons are the equivalent of the 18th century Luddites. If we let these idiots win we will return to the Dark Ages.

"PUT THEM IN PRISON FOR SABOTAGING LAWFUL COMMERCE "

And make sure all the food you give them is genetically modified and grown on land cleared from rain forest.

A Greenpeace activist tied himself to the anchor chain of the Global Wind, a ship carrying genetically modified soybeans from Argentina, in an attempt to stop the vessel from docking at Brazil's main grain port of Paranagua on Monday. Genetically modified soybeans are banned at the port, but are legally grown in nearly all states in Brazil. -- AP

What exactly are the Euros concerned about?

Their own wallets.

The politicians and the media know that the "scare" is ridiculous, but chose to foster a climate of fear about these products. It threatens the system, because, if food can be produced "better and cheaper", the justification for the price controls will quickly be seen for what it is.

They did the same with US Beef in the 80's. Started a big scare about the "uncertain health effects" of hormone fed beef - then banned it. All the while IGNORING the mounting evidence of the known harmful effects of feeding omnivores a diet rich in animal protein (the cause of Mad Cow).

By keeping "production" artificially low, the government holds prices at steady levels (often far higher than if the market determined the price!!). The money is used then to "subsidize" the agriculture industry (which makes them docile and subservient).
