HELSINKI (Reuters) - One in four Europeans has fallen asleep in the workplace, with the Irish leading the pack and the Dutch able to stifle their yawns best, according to a survey.
"Long workdays, routine tasks, meetings that drag on, and staring into the monitor are prompting workers around Europe to fall asleep at their workplace," one of the survey's co-authors, Internet jobs site Jobline, said in a statement on Monday.
The poll showed 24 percent of respondents had fallen asleep either at their desk, in a meeting or in the toilet. Thirty-nine percent said they had not fallen asleep at work, but had to make an effort to stay awake.
Close to 40 percent of Irish participants said they had fallen asleep at work, usually at their desks, while 80 percent of Dutch respondents said they had never slept at the office.
The poll from Jobline and Monster Worldwide was carried out between March 29 and April 13, and received responses from some 21,500 people in 14 European countries.
I stay awake at work by FReeping!
And people wonder why unemployment is 10-15% through out Europe
Well that's completely ridicuzzzZzzZzzzzzzzzzz...
""Long workdays,...."
My a$$. They are mandated to end at a specific time. Trying to get ahold of them after 4:30 their time is impossible, and don't even ask them to work on weekends! Add to that the most vacation days in a year and they have no reason to fall asleep at work. Unless, of course, it's not work its a welfare system with job gaurantees!
Improper use of preposition?
donno about that, my friends in ireland always seem to be at work at 7 or 8 in the evening, granted they start at 9, not 7, but they all seem to put in long days.
note that the Irish lead Europe in yet another category!!
How's this for improper use of something?!? Last year the company I work for (large enough at $115 million in business) fired someone for sleeping on the job. Seems however he pleasured himself in his cube before falling asleep. Since he was that stupid I can't believe the bucket head didn't light up between "satisfaction" and nap time!!!
it sounds odd but that's the way they say "in the restroom" in most of the rest of the English-speaking world.
When I was pregnant the first time I fell asleep at work every day for the first week or so. Fortunately the boss was overseas on a trip during that week.
I don't consider Ireland as legitimately part of Europe. (wink, wink) Take a look at any of the higher unemployment countries, they have lots of vacation days, mandated quite times, etc.
How come I always get the 4th when I call customer serice ?
I save that for driving home FROM work!
The Dutch must just be better liars. ;^)
It's just that kind of work environment that CAUSES people to stop caring, hence boredom, hence falling asleep.
If they actually had to work - I mean WORK - they wouldn't have time to get bored and fall asleep.
In related news, 98% of Kerry campaign workers report dozing off during their candidate's speeches. The only exception was Ms. Teresa Heinz Kerry. Her claim to stay awake could not be immediately verified, however, as her multiple cosmetic surgeries have left her eyes in a condition in which they are incapable of closing.
Wonder how they could tell?
I bet they would stay awake if someone told them that Saddam's NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) weapons were just found in Iraq!

"When I was pregnant the first time I fell asleep at work every day for the first week or so."
That helps explain why you weren't sleeping at night.
Ha-ha, I laughed at that too. Can't do that at my job, only a few toilets for dozens of workers. If you're there more than a few minutes someone's yelling at yah. I've perfected the art of sleeping with my eyes open staring at my computer monitor.
