Not only the same day. But, July 4th, 1826... 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence!
Some background: Adams and Jefferson were partners in furthering the Declaration of Independence. Adams was an opinionated and unpopular loudmouth, Jefferson was quiet and popular. Adams was key in the writing of the Constitution, Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.
Later, they were bitter political rivals. After their political lives were over, they wrote a series of letters to each other, over the years, which rekindled their friendship (not sure who initiated it, but, I believe it was Adams).
On his deathbed, on July 4th, 1826, Adams' last words are claimed have been, "only Jefferson is left." However, Adams was unaware that Jefferson had died earlier that same day.
This whole friendship, rivalry, history -- and their deaths, on the same important date -- to me, remains the single most astounding fact in the history of this great country.
Didn't Robert Frost die on Nov. 22, 1963, also?
Well, maybe if Sam Dash was living in NYC, he might have voted once for Nelson A. Rockefeller.
The G-man has been at my home cleaning guns with me all weekend. ;)
