Derail the Useless Florida Bullet Train

Posted on 06/03/2004 12:23:38 PM PDT by K1avg

Alright, folks, time to kill the useless liberal initiative that ignorant voters approved. The high-speed rail will cost Florida over $17 billion over 35 years.

Any Florida FReepers who haven't already need to contribute their signature to the DEBT campaign (www.debtpetition.com). We've only got 10% of what we need to put it on the ballot so far. Help out!

Bullet train is useless. Small portion of funds should be diverted to creating real transportation solutions to real transportation problems: There should be a mass transit system in Orlando.

$17 Billion?

Better double that.

I have never seen a government project come in on budget.

The problem with rail systems outside the Northeast corridor is there is no efficient way to get from the rail station to the place you need to go. There is talk about building a high speed system to run from SF to LA. Nobody seems to ask the question once say I go to LA how will I get to the place I need to be.

Whats the price difference between a bullet train and another I-4 expansion project? Florida needs to get with the 21st century and install some type of rail service. Whether its a subway for the greater metro areas or another form of mass transportation.

You gotta be kidding! Even expanding I-4 to, oh, 32 lanes wouldn't cost half as much as the bullet train. Even building another road to run parallel to I-4 wouldn't cost as much. Okay, so I'm exaggerating, but, nonetheless...

You're absolutely correct in that better transportation is needed, but a point-to-point bullet train is not the answer. Sure, jumping on I-4 or the Turnpike may take a bit longer, but what happens when you get to your destination, just like mkj noted. You're on your feet. No car, and taking a taxi costs more than driving there (barring major gridlock). A metro in Orlando would be the best use of this money, were it to be forced to go to railway projects. As it stands, the bullet train is stealing money from our highways and roads.

Sure, if it were free, it would be pretty cool. But $17 billion? That's obscene. The money would be much, much better spent on our roadways or the gawdawful education situation - maybe paying off the equally stupid class-size initiative.

but what happens when you get to your destination,

Depends on what's available at your destination: taxi, bus, courtesy van to your hotel, light rail, rental cars, airlines...
Heck, you might even hop into your own car if it's a return trip and you left it there previously.

Didn't Florida actually make this an amendment in their Constitution? So, it's not merely stopping a project, but overturning a constitutional amendment?

A subway in Florida?

That's called a "submarine."

I think we ought to DERAIL Florida, period. This thing with Terri Schiavo is the last straw. Apparently, it's perfectly all right with many Floridians to starve an innocent living breathing disabled woman to death. Florida is NOT a place I'm interested in and they can take their speed train and SHOVE IT where the sun don't shine. http://www.terrisfight.org

Most sane people considered the wording on the ballot to be unconstitutional. Of course, the Florida Supreme Court didn't see it that way.

From Union Station, you have the choice of using MetroRail (our light rail/subway system), MetroLink (heavy rail for longer distances..) or bus services. For all of the junk they've wasted money on in Los Angeles, we do indeed have a mass transit system that does work.. When they're not on strike.

We have Governor Jeb, and I think he's doing more to help Terri than any other Republican or Democrat would.
