Just over 19 years ago, Islamic terrorists hijacked TWA flight 847. They threatened to fly the plane into buildings if their demands weren't met.
On June 15, 1985, the terrorists singled out a US Navy diver, 23-year-old Petty Officer Robert Stethem, because he was American and because he was in the US Military.
After many hours of being cruelly beaten, tortured, and finally killed by the terrorists, they threw his body from the plane in a final disgraceful, cowardly act. His body lay on the tarmac for over two hours before the terrorists finally allowed the Red Cross to retrieve his body. The wounds were so terrible that his body had to be identified by its fingerprints. Throughout the ordeal, Robert Stethem did not yield, and instead encouraged his fellow passengers to endure by his example.
The terrorists made these statements:
"We are suicide terrorists! If you don't let us land, we will crash the plane into your control tower, or fly it to Baabda and crash into the Presidential Palace!"
The full story of this hijacking, which lasted approximately 17 days, can be read here:
The Story of TWA Flight 847
It has been 19 years since this brave young American was murdered. The terrorists remain at large.
Yes, we all remember Robert Stethem and those terrible days. I seem to recall the Religion of Peace was involved there too.
