ST. PAUL - Minnesota Public Radio star Garrison Keillor will head the bill for a state House DFL fundraiser as a pivotal legislative election campaign opens next month.
Keillor will host an evening of music and comedy July 1 at the O'Shaughnessy Auditorium at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, preceded by a $250-a-person reception.
Rep. Nora Slawik recruited Keillor for the fundraiser when she attended a local DFL dinner this spring in Rochester, where he was the guest speaker.
"He's obviously interested in helping Democrats," Slawik said. "He agreed to do it on the spot."
Tickets for the main show will be priced at $100, $50 and a student rate of $25.
DFLers, outnumbered 81 to 53 by Republicans in the House, are trying to regain the majority they lost six years ago.
They hope to raise at least $1 million for the campaign, House Minority Leader Matt Entenza, DFL-St. Paul, said Friday. With Keillor as a drawing card to the 1,200-seat O'Shaughnessy, the caucus could make a significant chunk of that in one night.
Also on the bill is the country band Westbound. Entenza said the caucus also hopes to book a well-known gospel choir.
Second Question: Why would they book a gospel choir when most DFL'ers are God-hating atheists?
END MPR FUNDING NOW.
Like duh...balance Public Radio. Now.
Balance?Eliminate!
I was not aware that Keillor was a government employee unless your counting his being one of NPR. He is as liberal as they come and does not miss any opportunity to bash conservatives. Ask Jesse Ventura?
The gospel choir is all for appearances--everyone will be bathed in piety, and feel like "giving from the heart"--LOL!
Their ancestors emigrated from cradle-to-grave socialism in Scandinavia and has thus made Minnesota a Democrat stronghold.
The up-and-coming generations are wisening up, though, and are getting fed up with paying high taxes to support welfare migration from Gary, Indiana.
First, there's the irony value. Second, they like the "soulfulness" of it, the idea of dipping their toe into the spiritual pond without getting wet and messy with "religion".
I wonder who they will get for the comedy?

After about 10 minutes of hearing Keillor I get all depressed. I've seen funerals funnier than this man.
Not to mention Somalia.
No joke. I have personal experience with this, having lived in downtown Minneapolis and walking to the grocery store at night.
They have been nothing but trouble for the locals in Minneapolis proper, while the suburbanites are cheering Minnesota's new diversity.
