Annual woodie car show draws big crowd to wharf

SANTA CRUZ
Marshall Machado of North Carolina knows what being passionate about automobile restoration is all about.
In 2000, while visiting his sister in Santa Cruz, he came to the annual Woodies on the Wharf show. After seeing the classic California cars, he vowed to one day return with a woodie of his own.
Machado had restored old Corvettes before but never a woodie. He went back to the East Coast and soon found a 1932 Ford woodie rotting in the barn of a Pennsylvania farmer.
"For me it was a labor of love, to rescue a car from oblivion and bring it back to life," Machado said.
After pouring $60,000 and four years of work into the car, Machado built a custom trailer for his woodie and hauled it 3,000 miles to this years show.
More than 200 similarly inspired people had cars on display Saturday in the shows 10th year. The event has quadrupled in size since its inception.
Visitors roamed the wharf taking in the various models, many with classic wooden surfboards strapped to the top.
"There are a lot of cars here and a great variety of styles. The weather is perfect, and the woodies are beautiful," said Barbara Webber of Sacramento.
Greg Martinez, 42, of San Francisco takes his 1929 Ford the first woodie model out at least once a week, and if gas prices creep any higher he can always go to his local liquor store for fuel.
"These old ones will run on anything, kerosene, whiskey. But its got to be a really good whiskey."
A car with real wood paneling... now there's a design classic!
Yeahhh... that's what I mean!
He said "woodie".
I smell a Viagra joke here.... somewhere.
We saw an old woody being towed there on Friday and were wondering if there was something up. Thanks.
When I was about 16 years old I saw the Ultimate Woodie for sale in a lot in Pasadena, CA. A 1937 Rolls Royce Woody for $7,000.
If that's a '46 Pontiac, my bride and I drove to and from the church on our wedding day (1978) in a '47 that looked just like it.
Oh, yes there are.
You just need to be very careful. Under-age is illegal.
It's the same here in Virginia.
While walking my dog in the local park the other day, I saw a young girl wearing a neon green bikini top. It was time for me to cross the street, away from her.
As hot goes, she was it. Probably about 14.
My mother called them "beach wagons".
I was just reading where the median housing price in Santa Cruz is now something like $637,000.
You know what that will get you? Maybe a rundown 3 bedroom, 2 bath cottage in a marginal neigborhood.
It's a very pretty place to live (assuming you can stand the politics), but I'm not going to be doing that. I bought a very nice 3/1.5 in central VA a few years ago for $92,000. Paid cash.
There is nothing wrong with this. It needs a bit of work, but my neighbors are exceptionally nice.
I then got a dog for $50. from the local SPCA. Out the door. He's nice too.
We have everything here that I need or want.
Was Wood Yee there with his wife/daughter?
