Collins Calls Opponent's "Pork Tour" a Load of Bull

COLUMBUS -Today, Mac Collins called his opponent's tour of barbecue restaurants to talk about pork spending, a load of bull.

Johnny Isakson, who is running against Collins for the U.S. Senate, and who in half the time in Congress as Collins has sponsored three times as much new spending, is touring the state to talk about the problems with pork.

"Mr. Isakson is full of bull with all this talk about pork," said Collins, a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee. "It is one thing to take money that has already been budgeted, authorized, appropriated, and is going to be spent, and bring a share of that home to Georgia, but Mr. Isakson often votes for unnecessary spending outside of the state that adds to our budget shortfalls and doesn't help Georgians."

Among those spending votes, Collins cited the Congressional Record which shows Isakson voted four times to support the National Endowment for the Arts which cost taxpayers more than $113 million.

Other controversial spending bills that Isakson supported included Congressional pay raises, $150 million so the government can make men good dads, bonuses for senior executives at the IRS, and $5 million to save Asian Elephants.

"I don't see any Asian Elephants in Georgia, but I see a candidate for Senate who has a steady diet of pork and is trying to feed voters a lot of bull, while being too chicken to show up at debates," said Collins. "I am not trying to be flip, but this guy sounds like a real turkey to me."

Confirming his position as the proven conservative Republican in the race, Collins has earned the support of the following six conservative organizations: Traditional Values PAC, 60 Plus Association, Free Congress PAC, Citizens United Political Victory Fund, American Conservative Union PAC and the Concerned Women PAC.

Since entering the race in September, Mac has earned the support of former Congressman and Secretary of the Army Howard "Bo" Callaway, who serves as Chairman of the Collins for Senate campaign. Collins has also earned the support of numerous conservative leaders from across the state including many long-time sheriffs, state legislators and local business leaders.

Collins is currently serving his 6th term in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Middle Georgia. He is traveling the state of Georgia with a conservative, issues-oriented campaign based on limited government, lower taxes, tort reform and local control of issues.

My opinion of these two men can be summed up in one simple word.

LAME!

I wouldn't be terribly overcome with grief if Collins were the eventual GOP nominee, but if the Republicans in GA are actually gullible enough to vote in Johnny Isaakson, well...I just don't know what to say.

Is there any possible way that this outcome can be prevented?

Mac Collins is my favorite Georgia candidate for the Senate. He'll get my vote.

As a team he and Saxby would do us proud.

Like I said: "I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if he were the eventual GOP nominee."

However, I still think that Cain would be a better choice.

There's no question in my mind though, that either man would be preferable to the lamentable Johnny Isaakson.

Hi Chunga,

Mac Collins is an honorable man and a good conservative...but does he offer the type of national leadership and unique skills and views of Herman Cain? We already have a solid legislator with Saxby, we need someone who is different and compliments Saxby's insider skill sets.

Plus, a win for Cain is a BIG win for Republican's nationally...and, GA is now leading the way for our party nationally (look at 2002 with Sax, Sonny, etc).

Mac Collins doesn't fit any of those bills...

Nope they're the pits. Nothing redeeming about them. At least Carolyn McCarthy does a few good things around the area but those two are MIA.

I like Herman Cain. He'd make a fine Senator, but Mac Collins has been a longtime stalwart conservative in the House, representing his district faithfully. In my mind he's earned his shot at representing the GOP in the primaries.

It wouldn't be wise for Georgia voters to abandon an elected representative like Mac who's proven himself. Herman has great values, he gives a great speech and his commercials are effective, but I'd like to see some sort of track record within the political arena before I support him for a statewide office.

"In my mind he's earned his shot at representing the GOP..."

Like Bob Dole in 1996?

"...but I'd like to see some sort of track record within the political arena..."

What about Reagan when he first ran for Governor, or GWB when he first ran for Gov? They had no track records.

The greatest Republican - Conservatives come from unexpected places outside the Beltway...

I suppose that's a reasonable response.

To me, legislative experience-even a proven track record in the U.S. Congress-does not trump values.

Even though I respect what Collins has done for his constituents, I don't believe that he will be the "best" spokesman for our side.

I believe that Cain can best articulate the conservative values that have led to the resurgence of the Republican Party within the state of Georgia.

That's just my two cents.

Scourge, thanks for supposing that my response was "reasonable." I'm honored.

Herman gets my vote in the general election if he wins the primary, of course. I have concerns about his electability, though.

I have an instinct that tells me that Georgia's moderate Democrats won't cross over to vote for a black Republican over a liberal black Democrat (Majette).

The GOP in Georgia needs a great deal of crossover appeal to lure the white Dems over to their side. It is an unfortunate reality of politics that in Georgia, there's a sizeable block of white Democrats for whom race is still a factor. My gut tells me that these people don't want to see the Republicans elect the first black statewide official in history. A sizeable number of these people, when faced with this prospect, will either sit home or pull the lever for Majette.

Part of Sonny's vote totals can be attributed to his promise to bring the flag issue to a statewide vote, which engendered support from the neo-confederate wing of the Democratic Party. These people will not vote for Herman Cain.

The Republicans need a candidate who can pull huge margins outside the Atlanta metro area. The man who can do that is Mac Collins.

Well, you definitely know more about the inner workings of GA politics than I do. But something tells me that if Denise Majette is the Democratic nominee, that she'll be a sure loser come November.

I could be wrong about this, but it just seems like a risky move on the part of the Democrats. After all, this is a woman who only ran for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Zell Miller, after she realized that she would probably be defeated in a primary for her House seat.

I don't think this woman's political career has legs.

To quote someone infamous. I feel your pain.

I'm stuck with Carl Lenin and Debbie Stabmenow.

At least Carl is old and Debbie can be taken out in 06 with the right candidate.....as in Mike Rogers or Candice Miller.

Having two of the most disgustingly liberal senators is what is fueling the ineptness of the NY republican party leadership (Pataki election for example).

And to think, some people actually griped about D'Amato!

How I wish there was someone like Alfonse D'Amato looming on the political horizon.

(Sigh!)

At least I have a good congressman, and my county delegation on the state level rates an A.

Although that jerk Lenin's been in office since the day I was hatched.
