CA: Deferral, once again / Guard deal produces fleeting savings

The best that can be said of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed deal on the prison guard contract is that it's better than having your eye poked out with a stick.

This wasn't a true renegotiation, where the two sides exchange views and compromise on provisions of the 300-page contract. Like Schwarzenegger's other "deals" this legislative session, it was merely a deferral of costs to a later date.

What a disappointment. A chance for true reform was dashed. Schwarzenegger's deal does nothing to close the gap between what legislators were told the five-year contract would cost ($567 million) and what it will actually cost ($2 billion). That contract, it seems, will still cost $1.9 billion.

It will just be more backloaded than it already is.

One question, and it is only fair to ask.

What was the Papers stance on the Recall, and did this $h!tty contract come up then?

I take it that your collection of links is growing rather handily these days.

Would that Arnold weren't providing so much material.

True enough, but that doesn't change the sucky facts of the sucky situation they're op-eding about! With each passing "deal," we're sucking more and more canal water he promised to pump out when the Davis Levee broke!!!

"Schwarzenegger called this a "huge victory." Hardly. He's erected a movie facade that hides the real fiscal landscape."

I hate it when the Maccabees at Saccabees hits a home run!!! GRAND SLAM!!!!
