MOSCOW (AP) - Friends and colleagues of the slain American editor of Forbes Magazine's Russian edition held a small, private funeral service Sunday for Paul Klebnikov in the Russian capital, Russia's Ekho Moskvy reported. About 40 people attended the service at St. Yekaterina's Church, the radio station said. Klebnikov will buried in the United States.
Klebnikov, 41, was gunned down late Friday outside the magazine's offices. Russia's Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov has said that he was taking personal control of the investigation, which authorities believe was likely connected to the editor's professional activities, according to Russian news reports.
Klebnikov, who also wrote a book about Boris Berezovsky, a tycoon who amassed a fortune in the chaotic and violent period of 1990s post-Soviet capitalism, was seen as widely knowledgeable about Russia's often-murky business world.
Klebnikov had said in May that he believed the "the era of so called bandit-capitalism is already in the past. In the mid-90's it was a very, very dirty process."
Forbes started its Russian-language edition in April. Klebnikov, U.S.-born of Russian heritage, previously had been a senior editor with the U.S.-based Forbes. In May, the magazine attracted wide attention by publishing a list of Russia's wealthiest people, claiming that Moscow had more billionaires who worked there or amassed their fortunes there than any other city in the world.
The international media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, said in a statement that it was "shocked" by the killing and called on the government to protect journalists. It said that five journalists were killed last year in Russia, and that official investigations have so far failed to uncover why they died.
Why do journalists think they deserve more protection than say ANYONE ELSE?
They're Special?
Actually, they perform a service that we all depend upon (especially those of us at FR), to find out what's going on in the rest of the world. [Biased as it is]
So, who's toes did he step on?
Thanks
Why does this not make me confident that justice will be done. Oh sure, they may pin it on some poor schmo but reaching back and getting the top guy involved? Nope.
Russia's and Iran's among others'...........Here's more........
