Wu's World - Oregon CD1 Congressional race

July 6th, 2004 Wu's World

Goli Ameri (R-Oregon), the Republican nominee for Congress in Oregon’s 1st Congressional district, today mocked David Wu’s attempts to misrepresent her positions on several issues in a poll he commissioned for his campaign.

“Ronald Reagan once stated to a political opponent, ‘you are entitled to your own opinion, but you’re not entitled to your own set of facts.’ David Wu should take heed of Reagan’s words,” Ameri said.

Wu’s most recent attempt to transform reality to his liking took the form of a public opinion survey conducted by his campaign. According to Ameri, “Now, it’s certainly true that all political campaigns conduct surveys of public opinion. In fact, my own campaign has planned at least two polls in this election. It’s even true that political campaigns will include in their surveys questions about the perceived vulnerabilities of their opponents. But what’s unusual about the Wu survey is how nearly all of the questions he posed about me were misleading and several totally misrepresented reality.”

Ameri learned of the poll’s questions when a surveyor from Wu’s research firm polled an Ameri staff member who took notes during the exchange. Surprisingly, the poll taker did not ask whether the respondent was employed by a political campaign or media entity - a question often used by pollsters to ensure a representative sample.

Ameri provided a detailed summary of the questions and her response to each in an effort to set the record straight.

“Political campaigns should be about ideas, leadership, and facts – not gross distortions, untruths, and appeals to the worst in us,” said Ameri. “I’m hopeful that despite this poll, Congressman Wu will ultimately agree. If he does, I look forward to an issue-oriented campaign that offers voters a chance to choose among two different visions for Oregon and our country. If he does not, then we will all be worse off for it,” she concluded.

Sampling of Questions Asked In A Poll For David Wu On June 29th, 2004

On Abortion:

Wu’s World: David Wu’s survey describes Goli Ameri as an “extremist” on abortion because – according to the pollster - she claims to support a woman’s right to choose, but actually supports “extreme” views such as a requirement for parental notification and a “ban on late-term abortions.”

Reality: Congressman Wu apparently holds that 2/3rds of the American people are extremists because they – along with Goli Ameri – believe that parents should be notified when their minor aged daughter seeks an abortion; or that partial birth abortion is unacceptable. Goli supports a woman’s right to choose and always has.

On Education

Wu’s World: The poll claims David Wu wants to keep money in public schools, but Goli Ameri wants to take money away from public schools and give it to “private and even faith-based schools.”

Reality: Goli Ameri opposes ANY reduction in funding for public schools. She also opposes public funding for Oregon’s private schools. Goli does support measures that encourage more parental involvement, more local control, greater school accountability, and more charter schools.

On Terrorism

Wu’s World: Wu’s poll claims Goli Ameri is publicly in favor of loosening immigration rules on Iran, which is listed by our government as a rogue terrorist state.

Reality: Goli Ameri favors current law. Wu’s attempt to pair Goli’s ethnicity with an egregious distortion crosses the line both of decency and integrity. During the Islamic Revolution, radicals in Iran persecuted Goli’s family and killed family friends. Goli’s commitment to seeing the war on terror through to victory has played a key role in her policy platform since the first days of this campaign.

Small Business Owner

Wu’s World: Wu’s poll says Goli Ameri calls herself a small-business owner, but her supposed ‘high-tech company,’ eTinium, is valued at less than $1,000 which means they likely do not own one up-to-date computer.

Reality: Goli Ameri had a very successful career as a high-tech executive with U.S. Leasing before starting her own small business as a consultant. At its height, Ameri hired on four people and enjoyed a number of prominent telecommunications firms as clients. In 2001-2002, when the entire telecommunications industry suffered a major meltdown, Goli’s company continued to operate though times were difficult. More recently the demands of her congressional campaign resulted in Goli placing her company in hibernation. Goli knows the challenges faced by small business owners, and she’s uniquely prepared to understand the help they need.

On Tax Cuts

Wu’s Reality: Wu’s poll says, “Goli Ameri is a self-proclaimed supply-sider, who is only in favor of business tax cuts and those that favor the wealthiest Americans.” David Wu, on the other hand, is described as someone in favor of “targeted tax-cuts to needy middle-class and working families.”

The Real Reality: Goli Ameri supports tax cuts that benefit all American families. The tax cuts Goli Ameri supported cut taxes for over 175 million American families, created 1.4 million new jobs since the first of the year, and generated ten straight fiscal quarters of unprecedented economic growth. David Wu opposed not just those tax cuts, but almost every suggested tax cut since his election. More to the point, he repeatedly opposed such middle-class tax cuts as elimination of the marriage penalty and an increase in the child tax credit. David Wu was ranked the SIXTH worst tax-and-spender in the entire US Congress by the non-partisan National Taxpayers Union – even worse than the Socialist Party Congressman from Vermont!

Corporate Scandals

Wu’s World: Wu’s poll claims Goli Ameri is publicly in favor of bailing out companies who are engaged in Enron-style accounting scandals.

Reality: Hey, when you've got nothing else to run on, just make something up. There is no truth to this whatsoever, and David's desperation is showing.

I don't agree with Goli on everything. Hey, I disagree strongly on her "pro-choice" position but this lady has both class and integrity. (She is for parental notification and against partial-brth abortion).

During the primary, she spent her campaign money to help defeat a billion dollar tax package.

Thanks for the ping! I don't think Ameri is in my district, and as far as politicians go, being against partial birth abortions and for parental notification is almost as far as you'll get on the pro-life issues, it seems. She does have class and tact, I can say that! Good for her!

Actually I live in N California, and the people pinged on this thread so far should be able to ping more.

Good for this lady. I'm so damn tired of being labeled an extremist when more than 50% of Americans are behind me on an issue.

Thanks to the mediots, a majority in America are now label as extremists.

Well heck, GD! I just assumed you were one of us endangered rightwing northwest loons. I never bothered to check. Newberger, you seem to be on your way to assuming that role. I have been too busy this summer to be a reliable monitor, but I will certainly 'ping' everyone to locally relevant issues.

Whenever the Watermelon Jihadists slither out of their spidey holes and make themselves known, I will use the Watermelon symbol to alert people.

Please ping me, whenever the Watermelon Jihadists promise to commit eco terrorism or actually do eco terrorist acts.

I did have one but lost it when my computer crashed. I will start rebuilding it. It's a shame that we can't see all the names on the locale page, isn't it?
