Al-Jazeera wins CRTC approval

OTTAWA -- The Arabic Al-Jazeera network has been cleared for viewing by Canadians.

In a decision bound to stir controversy, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, the federal regulator, granted the network approval Thursday for distribution by cable companies.

While cable companies want the network, the Canadian Jewish Congress and others argue that Al-Jazeera, often called the CNN of the Arab world, broadcasts anti-Semitic programs.

The commission, in its ruling Thursday, said distributors of Al-Jazeera in Canada will be required to guard against the broadcast of ``any abusive comment.''

That could mean editing or deleting some program content. Distributors will also have to record programming and keep the copies for a specified time, so the material can be assessed in the event of later complaints.

Support for broadcasting the network came from the Canadian Cable Television Assoc., including the powerful Rogers Cable, in part because the network can be picked up now using "grey-market'' technology that the CRTC considers illegal.

Al-Jazeera broadcasts 24 hours a day from Qatar on the Persian Gulf.

The network regularly receives video and audio tapes said to have come from al-Qaida mastermind Osama bin Laden and other prominent terrorists in the Middle East.

While the CRTC approved the Arabic network, it turned down an application to offer Italy's RAI International as a digital specialty service through cable or satellite.

More than 100,000 Italian-Canadians signed petitions favouring the RAI application to broadcast 24 hours a day in Canada.

That's because more Canadians agree with Al Jeezera's political viewpoint than they do with Fox's. In this regard, I would love to see a poll asking who constitutes a greater threat to Canada, Bush or al Qaeda? I have a pretty good idea what the results of that poll question would be.

Yet another indicator that we just might be screaming and yelling about the wrong border.

Our southern border is NOT THE ONLY ONE that ought to be shut down for awhile. And for good until the canucks show a little gratitude for their neighbors on its southern border.

They're everywhere around, and even the governor here is a canuck.

I suppose the desert dwellers aren't as fond of hockey

It is so typical... Fox News can't be believed, but the Jizzers fit the profile.

as a Minnesotan, I can tell you the northern border is as
secure as the building i work in with the 80 year security
guard sleeping.
an invader's only danger would be west nile from all the
giant mosquitos up there or getting hit by a renegade moose.

the only cable networks banned in Canada are hated American networks like ESPN, The Weather Channel,
and (especially) FOX NEWS! (we are the greatest
threat to them don't you know)

Yes. The Leftist swine who control Canada rather like anti-Jew and anti-American Soviet-style propaganda, you see. What they will not tolerate, however, is an alternative to the Leftist strangehold on television.

I think ESPN and the Weather Channel is allowed in Canada. FOX is not.
