Poles angered by German claim of wartime damages

REPARATION: Warsaw threatened to instigate a counter-claim in response to Germans' attempts to regain property they had lost after World War II

AP , WARSAW Friday, Jul 16, 2004,Page 6 Warsaw will seek compensation for damage the Nazis inflicted on the occupied capital during World War II if Germans forced from prewar homes in western Poland don't give up claims to their former property, the city's mayor said on Wednesday.

Some German groups and individuals have threatened to use Poland's entry into the EU on May 1 to regain property or seek compensation for land they were forced to give up in the aftermath of Germany's defeat in 1945.

"Our action is a reply to what is incredible German nerve," Lech Kaczynski said in an interview with TVN24 television. "That country caused the war, that country inflicted huge damage, that country carried out genocide on an unheard of scale and now it demands compensation."

Relations are generally good between Poland and Germany, which have painstakingly rebuilt ties since the collapse of communism in 1989 ended the division of Europe. Berlin strongly backed Warsaw's successful drive to join the EU.

Don't know what "property" is at issue but there at least three German states, including Silesia, which were taken by the conquering communists and given to Poland.

Perhaps the Germans should stage fake Polish attack on a frontier radio station and then cross the border and take what they want....

Nevermind.

Silesia is as much German state, as Louisiana is French one.

Now in East Germany, near Polish-German border you can find almost only homes for the (?)aged.
I can't imagine attack of retired Germans :)

A former in-law married into a "German-American" family - the parents were young teens in Germany during the war; grew up in Venezuela (hmmm) and then moved to USA in 1950s. The son was born in US; the family spoke German at home. When the former sister-in-law first went to their house in Connecticut in early 1990s, she noticed all of the shampoo, soap, etc, were from Germany. When she asked why, the US born son replied "Because they are superior."

Visit the western national parks and listen for the loudest tourists (adults, not loud kids) - fast alles auf Deutsch.

I am sure the ICJ will give this issue the proper attention it deserves. Just like they did in the Israel/Palestinian ruling. They will listend to the Germans and do what the Germans say is right.

I remember in Berlin, watching a German police officer beat a Pole at the 'Polish Flea Market' shortly after the Fall of the Wall, and remember another German police officer say words to the affect: "What does it matter ... he only a Pole...."

The Germans should shut up and thank the world that they still exist. (I am half German, incidently)

I wonder when the Germans are going to ask for the 1/2 of East Prussia that Stalin took. The Russians still have it, complete with Koenigsburg, which the Russians renamed Kalingrad. The Russians moved Poland West about 200 klicks after WWII, taking the Eastern third of Poland and giving the Poles a slice of Germany in compensation. All the areas were ethinicaly mixed, but after WWII Poles were often moved out of land taken from Poland and practically all Germans were removed from within Poland's new borders. If the Germans get compensation from Poland then the Poles can ask for compensation from Russia and Belorussia and Lithuania. Slovakia, Roumania and Hungary can ask for compensation for their territory siezed by Stalin and, well you get the picture.

Folks in Europe need to acknowledge that every square inch of the place has been taken by force many times and that they are either going to live with their current borders or return to incessant tribal warfare.
