Wow, seven posts before "the mark of the beast" kooks come out. Get a grip. It's a financial transaction, but now only electrons are being exchanged, rather than pieces of paper. No one is tatooing a number on your head or hand.

I swear, there are folks who think the president sneezing is a sign of the end times.

Look a few verses further (14:2)...it speaks about God's mark being on believers' heads.

No one ever talks about God's mark...just the Beast's. Why? Both are figurative. A carryover of symbolism from when the Jews wore a phylactory (sp?) on their foreheads to signify their belief.
